Hello,

I've been a longtime user of the RefreshaBraille 18 and am looking to get a new display to use with my phone. I see that the the Refreshabraille 18 is no longer being manufactured, so that puts me in the market for a new braille display. Does anyone have anay good recommendations for good 18 or 20 cell braille displays that I can consider?

Thanks,
Chris

Hello.

I currently have the APH Chameleon 20 Braille Display which works great with my iPhone.

I also own an Apple Watch and was able to use the old Refreshabraille 18 with it. Do you know if Apple Watch supports Chameleon 20?

Hi. The Apple Watch doesn't support it. It's only supported on iOS, iPadOS, macOS and JAWS for Windows. Hope Apple adds support for the Apple Watch.

Thank you for that info. Think I'm going to start researching the Focus 14 Blue by Freedom Scientific. Looks like that one has support for Apple Watch. Again, thanks for your hlep. :)

I highly recommend Focus displays. Never had a need to use the display with my watch, so can't say how well it does or doesn't work, but the Focus displays are nice. Being that you were looking for either 18 or 20, I wasn't going to recommend the Focus 14, but since you already mentioned it, let me encourage you to do that. I have a Focus 40. Sometimes I wish I had the 14 instead for portability. Not that the 40 is a monster by any means, but sometimes having something a bit smaller would be better than any extra cells gained in my particular use cases.

Truth is the Focus 14 Blue 5th Gen, while ruggedized in a way, is extra large in the attempt to ruggedize it. It is just as long as the 20 cell Brailliant Bi-20X. As for readability, the 14 cell count is just kind of annoying. Granted similar problems with 18 so you're used to it. Twenty cells just works so much better, whether reading the news or a message, or a 40-cell per line formatted Brf file. That said, Focus is still good and I'd be interested in a 20-cell if they'd redesign it. Focus 14 has a lower price going for it if that is a factor.

This is the only braille display I have ever owned, so it's nice to see someone else posting about it here. Having said that, it is also a very old, antiquated even, machine. While I personally have not used a braille display in a number of years now, everywhere I look people seem to be saying the same thing. That is to go with a 20 cell. It seems to be, for lack of a better description, the defacto standard between portability and functionality.

Orbit reader 20 / 20 +. I don't own it and what prevents me from getting it soon unless I have a real need for it is that we don't have cursor routing keys. I think I'd be more bothered by the lack of these keys rather than their braille cell technology in my humble opinion, but you wanna consider this too. It is very very affordable.

Having no cursor routing keys would definitely take some getting used to. I'm spoiled on having those cursor routing keys from using RefreshaBraill 18 and my Focus displays on both my personal and work laptops.

Hi,
I’m not sure if you’re in the United States or not, but if so you could reach out to your local NLS regional library. Depending on what state you’re in would depend on which E reader you could get. Some states have the humanware e-reader which is very similar to the chameleon except that it does not allow for on board editing and document creation or have any speech. The other option is the zoomX E-reader which I do not know a whole lot about. The humanware E reader works great as a braille display to pair with your iOS devices. The commands are the same as you would use on your refreshable 18. Happy to answer any questions if I can. Best of luck!

I had the Orbit before, and while the price is great, I found the slower refresh rate and the noise of the Orbit 20 to be a problem. Honestly, no cursor routing wasn't as much of a problem for me. If they ever made one that refreshed a bit faster, and wasn't quite as noisy, I'd love to have one. For now though, will stick with my Focus.
