setting up face id on an iPhone 16E?

Hi all,

I bought a new iPhone 16E this morning and I'm having trouble setting up face id. All I really want face id for is unlocking the phone and then on my banking app I used to have to use fingerprint id on my SE phone to get into my account so I may need face id for that, is there an easy way to set up face id? I found where to do it in settings but once I got into it it just told me to center my face in the frame and then told me when my face couldn't be seen but I didn't get any further than that.

For me, setting up Face ID for the first time took some trial and error. I found that if I held my iPhone still with one hand, at a slight angle away from my face, the camera would detect it and VoiceOver would instruct me to (subtly) turn my head left, right, up, and down, until the scan was complete. If the scan completes but recognition is unreliable, you can reset Face ID and try again in Face ID & Passcode Settings.

Hi Troy,

When setting up Face ID, I find that it is helpful to take things very slowly and only proceed when instructed to do so by VoiceOver.

Start by holding the phone in front of your face about an arm's length away. Don't worry about the instructions to center your face in the frame' or 'complete the circle' as those are neither relevant nor helpful. The important thing is to try and center the phone with your face as much as you can. If your face is out of view, VoiceOver will tell you.

In terms of actually scanning your face, after VoiceOver speaks the initial set of instructions about positioning your face in the frame and completing the circle, it will prompt you to move your head in various ways to actually complete the scan. For example, VoiceOver might say, "Turn your head right," "Tilt your head up," etc.

After following each instruction, I have found that it works best to pause until VoiceOver speaks the next prompt. For example, if VoiceOver tells me to turn my head to the right, I move my head to the right and hold that position until it tells me to do something else.

In case this may be helpful, I demonstrated and gave my take on the Face ID setup process in my podcast unboxing the iPhone 16e starting at around the 28-minute mark.

I will download your podcast and listen.

On my first try after I got home and had voiceover on I assumed that voiceover would let me know pretty quickly if I wasn't doing the instructions right so maybe that was my mistake.

I tend to hold my head at an angle at times without really realizing it so maybe that was a problem as well. I'll try again tomorrow, possibly with somebody helping me who is sighted in case I don't have the phone in exactly the right position.
