Hi all.
I'm getting an iPhone 17 Pro. I was thinking about getting one of the newish Apple tech woven cases, but of course, reviews are all over the place, people saying it's not protective but they haven't actually used/tested it, somebody saying it's "not a protective case" multiple times but admitting it survived a drop on to concrete just fine, somebody saying they've used theirs for a year and dropped it on concrete and so on and it's great.
On my XR I have a fairly chunky Otterbox case of some sort, rubber back, rubber all along the sides, lip that sticks up fairly high over the screen. I'm thinking something lighter might be nice, also I don't really like the high lip for landscape work, e.g. in Garage Band you basically have to drag right against it to use the controls at the top.
I try to be pretty careful with my phones, I've maybe dropped mine a few times on our wooden floor. But of course, it's the accidents that are the problem, everybody tries to be careful. I'd like something that's reasonably protective, and has some grip.
if I'm sitting I'll often put the phone on my leg. I don't need something that will slide off depending on what pants I'm wearing. Not that I just leave it sitting there unattended, but I'd like to be able to take my hand away without worrying about it sliding to the floor. I also don't want something super slippy to hold in my hand.
The woven case sounds like it might fit the bill, but like I said, the reviews are all over the place. I'm planning on trying to get to touch one, but i figured I'd see what recommendations people have that they like for cases. To be clear, I'm not settled on a lighter case, I don't really care about weight that much, I just know the woven ones are lighter, so I thought if they work, it might be an interesting new thing to try. I'm way more interested in protecting the $1300 piece of electronics I just bought, you know?

Spigen Rugged Armor Case
Hi, I'm a bit of a case nut so I've purchased and tested a fair few cases for my iPhone 17 Pro. My favourite so far is one of the first I bought almost a year ago, the Spigen Rugged Armor case. I'll start with the grip, as I often use both hands when using my phone, I can rest this case on my stomach and it does not slip. It has subtle ridges along the edges so it won't easily slip out of your hand. Next is the lip around the screen, it's not as severe as the lip on the Otterbox cases, and the lip is less promanent along the left and right edges of the screen, so you wouldn't find it getting in the way whilst using your phone in landscape. One of the things I most appreciate about this case is that the camera portion of the phone's back is highly protected, I find that is lacking with a lot of other cases. Regarding the buttons, they are very tactile and yet they don't stick out too far, therefore they don't usually get pressed by accident if your phone bumps up against something in a bag or pocket. The camera button is lightly covered, which is often not the case with other brands. The MagSafe works beautifully too, once you've connected your charger it stays snugly in place. I recall this is a mid-priced case, and yet it's the one that has checked all my requirements for protecting my iPhone.
I just use Apple Silicon cases
And my iPhone 15 I just use either of the Apple clear or silicone cases. I think those extra bulky cases are overkill personally. I don’t want super bulky have a phone in my pocket and those cases are I think called Slim fit. They just go around the back in the corners of the phone. It’s been plenty of protection for me. I know we use all our devices differently and have different needs for protection so that’s just what I use. Of course I’m using a base model iPhone 15 so I don’t know how helpful this is but just wanted to put in my two cents. I actually never use the application until this phone but I like them so I probably use them again.

It sounds like you're getting the pro because of the good features?
it's pretty much the same size as the standard 17.
so it sounds like you want some of the new features.
I would honestly suggest if you can to pre-order new Iphone 18 pro.
The 17 is a phone that is just the foundation for the new ai stuff and everything that the next phones will do.
In my oppinion Ai could solve many of the things visually impaired people like me and you couldn't do before.
so it's fully worth it.
if not I'd suggest getting the pro max which I have rather than the pro.
but I asume you liked the size of the pro which is why I say the 18 pro.
What do you think?

I just got a case and stuck with it.
I don't know brands and all that stuff.

I didn't know the 18 was coming out, I don't really keep up with Apple's stuff. I decided to get a new phone and picked the best one available, or I guess the one that made the most sense to me. It's really that simple.
IIRC the only thing the 18 pro does is a new camera setting and slightly longer battery life. If that's so, not really a lot of difference. I think I'll be fine with the 17 Pro.

since the 18 pro is available for pre-order today infact you could take a look.
It is worth getting the latest one when you're upgrading from an old phone as old as the 14.
It is definitely not a light difference from the 17 pro max even.
it's a big one but only if you need the perfomance it gives and will use features that will take advantage of it.
they should last longer too.
if you're in america I'd say definitely it's worth it.
battery is about the same as the 17 pro max which is kind of cool.
it's more than last years pro and enough that it's matching the 17 pro max level.
but if not it makes sence.

And for a case I got the Otterbox Defender Pro, which is a lot like the case I had for the old phone, but the lip around the screen is smaller, so that's nice. My wife says it looks a lot like the SPygen. I debated between the SPygen, the Apple, and the Otterbox. At least one of them wouldn't have gotten here until tomorrow, so I figured since the Otterbox would arrive same day as the phone and it worked really well for the old one, I'd just stick with it.
I didn’t upgrade to the latest phone when I got mine
I upgraded from my SSA 2022 to 15. I had my reasons for doing that though. I wanted something that still had a switch for the muting. I really just don’t like the idea of the action button. Yes I know, my next device will have one and I’ll have to get used to it. But I wanted to get something with a physical switch. Well I still could. So last year in August I got my iPhone 15. It’s working perfectly fine so we’ll keep it for as long as I can. It’s still getting updates with my SE. We kept the SE iPod. I was only able to do that because I traded in my iPad mini six generation to get my iPhone 15 and then kept my 2022. They actually asked me in the Apple Store if I wanted to trade in the SE phone as well and I just like no, I wanna keep that so I did. I just kind of think it’s easier for me anyway to have all of my music and other immediate consumption on separate device so I’m not interrupted my notifications and things like that with my regular phone. My two devices are on the same Apple account so they do have all the same music and things on them if I want to. I just find it easier to have a separate device. I was actually Apple suggestion. And I was going to get an iPad before but they were discontinued by the time. I had a chance to go get one. So this is the best thing to keep her around an old phone and he’s like an icon. Probably keep doing that. You know once things don’t get updated anymore or something I’ll just keep them around there something I don’t know we’ll see. As far as your case the best thing I would do if you can is to get your hands on a couple different cases and see which ones be the best for you.
