Wicked bizarre issue with dictation: Anyone else seeing this?

Apple Beta Releases

OK, I have something stupid weird going on here, and I can't for the life of me figure this out to save my A double crooked letter, and it's driving me bonkers!

So... Ever since I updated to the iOS 26.5 most latest developer beta seed which came out I'm guessing today, 4/14/2006, Now, any time I double tap on a text entry field, no matter what app it is, with one exception, which is the Messages app, or any other Apple stock app like Mail, Music, etcetera, I hear no little chime when I then two finger double tap, AKA, magic tap, to start dictation. Visually, I have enough sight to tell that in the bottom right corner of the keyboard, on any app aside from any Apple stock apps, the dictate icon is lighting up even though I don't hear the chime, but no dictation is occuring when I speak. Further, after about 2 at most seconds, the dictate icon deactivates. Again, no audible indication of this, but I have enough vision to tell. Here's the even more weird part though. If I double tap that actual dictate icon, I then do hear the chime, and dictate works perfectly. I even then can stop dictating with the magic tap like before. Further still, at that point, dictation works fine until I either 1, dismiss the on screen keyboard, or 2, force quit the app from the app switcher, and then relaunch it. Yes, before anyone asks, I disabled wifi just in case my internet network was having issues. Yes, I did go to settings>Apple intelligence and Siri and disable and re-enable intelligence. I couldn't find a separate setting like before to just disable Siri alone. I also did go to settings>General>Keyboard and disabled and re-enabled dictation. I've also signed completely out of iCloud and back in. I even signed totally out of my Apple ID, and back in... None of that fixed it. I tried on cellular 5G ultra wideband, and also that didn't work. I went to Settings>General>Reset, and reset all network settings. No good. I even deleted all siri and dictation data from Apple's end. I've reset and restarted the phone/springboard bhy doing a quick volume up, volume down, then pressing and holding the side button until the phone restarted. I also did the volume up, down, side button, then double tapped on power off, and totally shut off the phone for about 2 minutes, then turned it back on. I made sure I had over 50 percent battery. I made sure I'm not in low power mode, or anything that may make it not send the query through correctly. My friend told me he's not having this issue at all after updating, but then, he's got an iPhone 16 Pro max. I have the 15 Pro Max. I can't imagine it's isolated to just the 15 line, but, I suppose, anything's technically possible. I'm not complaining. I mean, this is a beta, so, anything can happen, but while I did report and file this through the Feedback app, I'm just wondering if anyone else in the right conditions as listed above can reproduce this. I mean, this is just insane nuts! I can't imagine what in the hell is going on! Excuse my language. I've used iOS ever since 2009, so am profoundly familiar with it, and with Voiceover both, and I cannot think of anything else to do that may fix this. Taht said, I'm open to any suggestions.

Chris.

Share Your Bug Reports with AppleVis

If you experience a bug in Apple Beta Software, the most important thing you can do is to file a report in Feedback Assistant. Please do not assume that Apple is already aware of a bug or that your report won't make a difference; your report may provide crucial information, and submitting bug reports directly to Apple helps them reproduce and resolve the issue faster. The more reports they receive, the higher the priority Apple is likely to give to fixing the bug.

If you are using beta software, please use the Feedback Assistant on your device to submit feedback and bug reports. If you are using a public release, this blog post explains how to report the issue and what information to include.

In 2025, AppleVis launched the Community Bug Reporting Program with the goal of improving the quality and quantity of information we share with the community about bugs in Apple software releases. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please submit your reports via our Community Bug Report Form.

All reports shared with AppleVis must first be filed with Apple via Feedback Assistant. More information about the Community Bug Program is available here.

HelloI'm seeing this too, although I don't have site enough to know the dictate icon does anything. Please as many testers as possible report this. ,

At least I know I'm not crazy! Shawn, when you tried it, are you using a 15, or something else? I ask as a friend of mine claimed that he updated on a 16 pro max, and isn't having the issue, which honestly, I find very hard to believe, but whatever. I'm not gonna argue and start a war flame with him, as frankly, it's not worth my energy doing so.

Can confirm this on 26.5 public beta 2. Works as stated in messages and nowhere else! iPhone 15 pro.

I've screen shot it, screen recorded, written bug reports to Apple with no change. if it's any consolation the iOS keyboard dictation is full of bugs for sided and blind users alike! For me it's ever since one liquid glass and two the superduper emoji, Memoji, Jen emoji bullshit! Don't get me started how buggy actual typing on this mess is these days! Frustrating times indeed!

I know that people are having trouble with the dictation, with voice-over in the latest version of the ios beta, I am the one glassheart is refering to that has the sisteen pro max i truly thought, that i was not having the issue but I am I have a work around that will work until apple gets the api issue fixed install the Gboard from google and this will allow you to use dictation in all apps this i know is a work-around/band-aid for this current issue but this should aleveate the dictation problem until apple gets this fixed.

Not trying to be rude, but I'm a little shocked that the last person has had this exact bug going on for longer than just the current seed. I've only just noticed it, and it appears, that's the same for quite a few others of us. I'm not doubting that last poster's findings, but yeah... If that was a rant to just say Apple is sh*t in general, then this ain't the forum topic for it, buddy! Please, let's all try to be civil here. If we want Apple to see this, and also to take our bug reports seriously, which, by the way, I hope I'm not the only one reporting this issue particularly, then we need to keep things professional, as, I guarantee at some level of the work chain, surely, someone, somewhere, some how is viewing this post. If they see enough of us are having this issue, bam, it'll be prioritized. But if no one but me and maybe 1 other report it, they'll just assume it's isolated weird to us and never do anything about it. And by the way, just one more thing to be super crystal clear. This is not a matter of dictation working correctly only in the Messages app. I said that from the beginning! This is any stock app made by Apple directly, it's working. The only time it's not is any 3rd party app.

All, please let's try and turn down the temperature here. Regardless of whether this is new in the latest 26.5 beta or not, if you're on Beta and experiencing the issue, please report it to Apple if you are able.

Hi,

I have an iPhone air and a refurbished 14 and they both do this.

By Lee on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 - 13:53

This is odd. Never seen this until 26.5 beta 2 which I installed yesterday. So, the other people who say they have this are you on the betas? or if not it is amazing that this has never come up before in say 26.4 or before. Also seems not to be phone model related.

By glassheart on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 - 16:16

@Michael, thank you for that comment. I couldn't have agreed more! That was my whole entire point; if we don't report it, and just complain, what good is that doing? So again, thanks for stepping in as you did. @Lee: Did you look at the forum section where this was initially posted? The reason I'm asking is not to be a jerk. I'm literally genuinely asking, as some people don't. I posted this in the beta area for iOS, so yeah, this is definitely a beta thing, not an official build thing. My apology if that wasn't clear.

After reading this Fred, I was reminded to report the issue. I’ve just gone to re-create the problem so I could give a detailed explanation of the steps I’ve taken. I went into Messages and attempted to begin dictation using magic tap. To My surprise, the magic tap were as expected and started dictation. The owner thing which has changed in the past 24 hours is that I did have to get a replacement 17 pro last night as I managed to smash my previous one in the mechanism of an electric reclining sofa. Of course when setting it up, I let it install iOS 26.5 beta 2 as it warned me it couldn’t restore all data without me updating first. . Other than that, everything should be the same as it was before I set up the new phone. I’m tempted to start a YouTube channel. A bit like the fascinating hydraulic press channel but using my sofa mechanism instead of the hydraulic press. It took less than a 2nd to trash my phone but the crunch sounded somewhat satisfying. Thank you AppleCare.

Ah so mine is working in messages, Mail and Safari at time of dictating this. but not in WhatsApp.

By glassheart on Wednesday, April 15, 2026 - 22:04

With all due respect, people, please read the origional post I posted, as I said flat out multiple times in my origional thread, and also in a few of my comments, that the issue only occurs with 3rd party apps, not with stocked Apple apps like Mail, Messages, Safari, etcetera. It's probably some sort of an API thing with how it hands off the double tap gesture handshake magic tap dispatched to the core UI to be able to bridge the dictation activation but why only in 3rd party apps it's breaking but not in stock, that's the trillion dollar question. Ey?

By Angel Blessing on Thursday, April 16, 2026 - 11:35

One thing i ahve notices in third party apps is if you start the dictation by double tapping on the dictation button, you can then use the magic tap to stop dictation, so I agree with Glassheart, that there has to be something with the api, on the backend that is not allowing the trigger action to start dictation, witht he magic tap, but allows the magic tap to stop dictation in third party apps. I wonder if this is just IOS related, or if tv os has the same issues.

We ask that everyone please leave moderation to those whose responsibility it is to perform such functions. Saying things like "Read the original post" when someone is just trying to contribute and offer their experience, is not helpful.

I didn't realize this was an apple wide issue since I mostly use Apple apps. I have noticed this in a few apps like be My eyes and just figured that these apps hadn't kept up with iOS 26.5 beta 2 changes.

Glad people understand the real issue and have reported it.

BTW, I am using an iPhone 15 Pro with the iOS 26.5 beta 2 and do see this as described.

Good afternoon,
I am seeing this too, but only on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. Not Maya 13-inch m4 iPad pro.
Why would it happen on one, but not the other?
Maybe this isn’t even more proof that a restore is in order for my iPhone.
I wish I could figure out how to get my recordings out of the ooTunes app. Once I do that, I’ll be all set.
