Braille has gone completely crazy.

Apple Beta Releases

Hello everyone! I wanted to ask if any of you are experiencing the same issue with the Braille screen input while using iOS 18.1 beta 7. Specifically, my Braille input has gone completely crazy, or more accurately, the gestures assigned to it. For example, when I try to delete a word or a letter, it doesn't do that, but instead deletes the whole text or an entire line. This makes it really hard for me to enter text and correct it. When I was still on beta 5, things were even worse, as I couldn't use this text input method at all. The problem then was that the gestures were completely out of control and didn’t do what they were supposed to, like the keyboard closing on its own, modes switching randomly, and so on. It was a real disaster. I hope they fix it soon. Without Braille, I feel like I’m missing a hand.

Best regards 😁

Hopefully you can answer this for me, and hopefully the new beta will be fixed before release.

Is it possible to switch from grade 2 to grade 1 braille while editing if you need to enter something in grade 1 braille? I know in earlier versions you would do a three finger swipe to the left and that would change tables. However, with that now putting you in command mode, I do not know if that is still possible.

Thanks.

Hope you report and this is fix on the RC that probably coming next week. Did you do a restart?

Basically, the Braille grade have been merged with Braille tables in IOS 18. So in Voiceover Braille settings, you go to the Braille Tables options and add the required tables including different Braille grades for the same language, e.g., Contracted and uncontracted Braille of UEB. Now, while in Braille Screen Input, swipe up with two fingers to change between all the tables you have added.

Hope I make sense.

Also beware that for BSI to work you must have a 6-dot table absolutely somewhere in your braille table list, otherwise if you just have 8 dots VO will do strange things that might force you to reboot your iphone (once for me).

I hope it gets sorted for you. I can't reproduce any of the issues you mention. I actually find it works beter than previous betas, where I had trouble registering the space gesture swiping right, it would add a dot 5 lots of the time. Now more fluid. Thanks!

Good evening,
I'm using an iPhone 15 pro, with the latest developer beta of iOS18.1 & all is well here.
In fact, I'm using Braille screen input, to type this response.
In case anyone's curious, I have my orientation locked in screen away mode, with my charge port to the left.
That's how I was taught to use it & other than briefly trying it with my charge port to the right, which felt very strange to me, this is how I've always used it & the issues have been minimal.

Me too I have 0 problem with BSI as of the latest beta 6 or something.

BSI works fine for me. Focus, gestures, everything fine.
It's so useful that Command mode is mapped to single tap on the edges of the screen, Double tap on edges of screen is for input mode now.
Running the latest stable releaseversion of IOS here on 15 Pro Max.

So it turns out that I'm not the only one with this issue, others are experiencing it as well. However, these are isolated cases. Let’s hope Apple decides to fix it, rather than ignoring it, thinking that since only a few users are affected, it’s not worth addressing the problem.
Best regards, and wish me luck that this issue gets resolved as soon as possible.
