TalkBack Braille keyboard

Hey everyone, hope you’re all doing well! First off, I’m really excited to be writing on AppleVis again. I’m so happy it’s back and running smoothly—huge thanks to everyone who made it happen!

I’ve got a question, and I’m hoping some Android users can help me out. I’m using an Android device as a secondary phone and I’ve been using TalkBack’s Braille keyboard. It works pretty well, but is there a way to get audio feedback when typing? On iOS 18, for example, when I use BSI, I hear little clicks like a QWERTY keyboard, which I find super helpful. Is there any way to get that kind of sound feedback on TalkBack’s Braille keyboard?

Thanks so much in advance!

Guys :) remember that in ios 17 we didn't have this option either.
I am curious though, I too have a secondary old s20 ultra to fiddle with. How does talkback braille keyboard work anyway? And what is possible or not compared to ios braille screen input?

Hey! It’s true that this wasn’t in iOS 17, but I loved this little detail in BSI on iOS 18 so much that I got really comfortable with the sounds. I think they’re useful because they give extra feedback. Of course, I could type without them, but I find them super helpful.

As for BSI on Android, I think it works really well and is fast. I do prefer BSI on iOS, though, because it’s what I’m used to and I’m more familiar with the iPhone commands. That said, the TalkBack braille keyboard also works great and is really fast. It’s the only way I type on Android. You should give it a try—I think you’ll like it!

Yes, myself I felt very happy with this nice addition in ios18. Now the only thing left in my humble opinion would be for the auto capitalization setting to be synced accordingly with bsi. Thanks, I will certainly give it a try.

Yeah, auto-capitalization with BSI would be spot on, totally agree. I’ll suggest it to Apple, maybe they’ll roll it out one day.
And no worries about the TalkBack Braille keyboard. Hope you like it!

The major issue I had with TB Braille keyboard was that there was no gesture to switch between Braille tables. I use my phone in Spanish, and do a lot of writing in Spanish, but also in English, and having to go in to the keyboard options menu to switch both language and contracted or uncontracted each and every time, as opposed to a gesture that will just switch me between the two tables I use was just annoying. Other than that, I found the gestures good, accuracy was also good. But having to switch keyboard language and contraction level independently and every single time, was just one thing of many that made me go back to iPhone after a few months on Android.

Hi folks, it's great to be back up and running! Regarding sound feedback I imagine google would welcome that feedback and it wouldn't be as tricky to impliment as some other things. I don't use it on iOS, probably wouldn't on android but that's just me. As for comparing the braille keyboards I think you just have to try and see what you like. I used to think talkback's was a little better since we didn't need the rotor, iOS 18 obviously addressed that. I find android's implimentation to be a bit more stable while the iPhone can do a little more, especially if you like that command mode, but they're so close it's hard for me to say "this one is better!" Pick your features, decide what you can live without or keep both around.
