Paired with Speech Central—which is also completely free when used with TalkBack enabled—it offers smooth, natural-sounding reading on a wide range of compatible Android devices, including some mid-range models released in 2020. Slower devices may still pause occasionally while generating speech.
Kokoro is an 82-million-parameter text-to-speech model known for producing high-quality voices despite its relatively small size. After the initial model download, speech is generated entirely on your device and works offline.
One important distinction: this is best suited to listening to books, articles and documents. It may not work well as your TalkBack voice because generating speech can introduce a delay. Even a powerful device may not provide the immediate responses you need for comfortable navigation.
For the best experience, use Kokoro for reading within Speech Central, where buffering helps keep playback smooth. You can also use Speech Central to export the speech as an audio file for listening later.
