Cannot use first-letter navigation in tables with single-key Quick Nav when the "Always allow typing in text fields" checkbox in VoiceOver Utility is selected

Category
VoiceOver Commanders
Severity
Moderate

Description

When focused on an app table with single-key Quick Nav on and the “Always allow typing in text fields” checkbox in VoiceOver Utility selected, it is often not possible to use first-letter navigation to quickly jump to items in that table, as VoiceOver interprets key presses as Quick Nav commands.

To reproduce this issue, turn single-key Quick Nav on, select the “Always allow typing in text fields” checkbox, and then focus on any app table, like the “utility categories” table in VoiceOver Utility. At this point, pressing G should jump to the “General” category; however, focus does not move, and VoiceOver announces “image not found” as when not focused on a table, the letter G is by default mapped to the “find next image” command.

Workaround

Either turn single-key Quick Nav off when navigating a table by pressing VO-Q, or deselect the “Always allow typing in text fields” checkbox in VoiceOver Utility > Commands. Note, however, that VoiceOver behavior in text fields may be less predictable or reliable when this checkbox is deselected.
