At the end of each month the AppleVis Editorial Team take a look at all the apps which have been posted to the site during that month - either for the first time or where there has been a significant update - and decide which of these we think is the most noteworthy.
This month was perhaps our easiest ever, as it's difficult to imagine a developer doing more to embrace the needs of blind and low vision users … not only have they done everything possible to ensure full VoiceOver support, but they have even added a slew of features to the app specifically for VoiceOver users. And, if that weren't enough, it also happens to be a great app!
The app in question is lire (Full-text RSS), an iOS app that makes it easy to keep up-to-date with what's happening on your favourite websites. For those of us still coming to terms with the impending demise of the Google Reader RSS service, the arrival of lire and the hard work put in by the developer to make it accessible could not be more timely or more appreciated.
As if to prove how right our choice was, just today another update to lire hits the App Store with even more features and tweaks for VoiceOver users. If you haven't already done so, we would strongly encourage you to take a closer look at lire.
April was another great month for blind iOS gamers, with the highly-regarded NightJar game now finally becoming available outside of the United Kingdom.
Another app where the developer has worked hard to add VoiceOver support is Dice World - Farkle, Yatzy, Balut, Pig - With Friends and Family. The nature of the games in this app and their game boards is such that you might still have to spend some time familiarising yourself with things, but again the developer deserves credit for the great job that they have done with embracing the needs of VoiceOver users.
The final app which caught our attention this past month was Google's Chrome web browser for iOS. Although not new, it is maturing very nicely, and its accessibility makes it a great alternative to Safari. In fact, it has now replaced Safari as the browser of choice for at least one of our Team.
