How to Update

iOS 17.2 and iPadOS 17.2 are available via Over-the-Air Update (Settings > General > Software Update) via Finder on a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, or via iTunes on a PC or Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier.

Before updating, we strongly recommend making a full and complete backup of your device (either locally or in iCloud, depending on personal preference). This will ensure that, in the unlikely event that something goes wrong during the update process, you will have a current backup on hand in case a device restore becomes necessary. Also, if using OTA update, we recommend plugging your device into a power source for the duration of the download/installation process, so as to prevent the unlikely event of your battery going dead during the update.

More information on how to update the software on your device is available on this Apple Support page.

We'd love to hear your thoughts after you've had a chance to install the updates. What new features do you find most useful? Are there any changes you don't like? Please share your feedback in the comments below. Let us know what Apple got right with each release and where you think there's still room for improvement.

I'm quite confused on that. Also, Apple has to prepare and display device-specific release notes so that I don't have to read about features that are not supported on my device at all, like the new translation option for the so-called action button, which my device lacks. Alternatively, any new features, updates or fixes effecting certain models should have that specified. There might even be a setting to optionally hide them on unsupported devices entirely.

I'm still in the process of updating all of my Apple toys, but the phone update is somewhat disappointing so far. I still can't change my calendar alert or reminder tones back to Circuit, and I had heard something about a feature which might clear out all of the excessive space music is taking up on my phone. I have 0 songs downloaded, as I always prefer to simply stream my music, yet music's documents and data are still taking up nearly 8 GB. Once upon a time, it used to be possible to clear data in the iphone storage area, but this is no longer the case. I understand that streaming music may require caching, but it shouldn't be 8 GB, andone would think that it would clear cache data at least once a month or something. Looking forward to rumored changes on my watch, but the phone update wasn't nearly as beneficial as I was hoping it would be.

It was supposed to be launched earlier, but was put off till now.

I've been waiting this out to see if the intermitant double-tap issue has been addressed. While I can't hold out forever, I want to know if this update addressed this but. Thanks.

I found something that may help you. Possibly. As I am sure you have noticed, when you go into any of the 'tones' choices, besides 'Ringtone', it will show you a list of the newer ringtones as well as any 3rd party you have purchased or otherwise installed onto your device.

While wandering around the dreaded interwebs, I came across a website that has made it possible to download every single ringtone currently in iOS.

My thought is that, if you download the file and pick out the one(s) you want to use, you should be able to make the Circuit ringtone be recognized by your iPhone as a 3rd party downloaded ringtone, and thus you can use it as you have before.

HTH. 😅

Almost forgot to mention this. The file you want under the 'Download Options heading will say something like blah blah 78 files. 🤠

Can anyone confirm if the rather annoying email jumping bug has been fixed yet? I'll be updating, ;, would be nice if I ⊦ that fixed! As email is the bulk of what I do with my advocacy work!

By Brian on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

What does this bug do, or not do, exactly?

By WellF on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

Lots of stuff doesn't even apply to my iPhone 13 model.
Journal is, well, basic, but accessible. I'm not gonna use it since I'm already 4 years into day one, however it feels good to have alternatives.

By Brian on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

I'm thinking this was /is more of a preview application. I suppose, for now, it is a means of quickly jotting down ones thoughts.

Perhaps it will evolve into something really worthwhile over time. 🤠

Hello!

I found one new bug when using VoiceOver in iPhone.
After we go into edit mode on the home screen to drag or move an app , and after performing the action, Voice Over announces that editing is in progress, even if we have stopped the edit mode.
To reproduce the problem:
1. Make sure VoiceOver is turned on. On the Home screen, find any app.
2. Swipe down with one finger (VoiceOver will say "Edit mode"). Click twice.
3. Next, find any app and swipe up once (VoiceOver will say "Drag 'App Name'") and tap twice.
4. Next, exit the editing mode, you can simply go to the home screen.
5. Swipe right or left until you find the app you were trying to drag. After the app itself, the next object will be the name of the app, after which VoiceOver reports that an app editing .
Are you experiencing this behavior from VoiceOver?
P.S. This bug is observed only on the home screen; in the app library everything works as usual.

Hello. I'm very excited about this new app. I haven't gotten a new iPhone yet, but my parents want to do that before Christmas so we shall see what happens. But anyway, I've been on Dreamwidth since 2014 and cannot say enough good things about it. Here's hoping Apple's journal app will live up to my expectations just as Dreamwidth has done. I've never really given much thought to journaling for the purpose of jotting down one's thoughts on very personal topics, but am very much looking forward to expanding my horizons with this new phone.

By Enes Deniz on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

Well, almost, or perhaps literally each and every update is accompanied by new bugs that make it a challenge for VoiceOver users to edit the home screen. You find out they're gone in one update, only to have them back in the next one. Do they really miss us so much? I shall have them know that I hate bugs! Well, too bad I don't have the power to squash them!

By Holger Fiallo on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

FYI. The app will be link to your photos, music, and probably to your messages. You suppose to give permission to the app to access your photos and music so it will make suggestions.

By Enes Deniz on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

I was surprised to hear I had 42 unread messages. When I opened the Messages app, I found out that the messages that I had deleted a few days ago, were back.

By Missy Hoppe on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

I'm going to download this file now and see if I can get anywhere with it. I haven't tried to add new custom ring tones for a while, so hope I remember how. In any case, it will be great to have this file around.

By Missy Hoppe on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

I've just downloaded the 78 files. Do I need to change them to m4r files for them to work, or will they work as m4A? In the past, I've always had to change the extention, and am happy to do that with these if need be, but wanted to make sure it was necessary first. Thanks again!

By Brian on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

As I understand things, they should work as they are. However, I would encourage you to make 2 copies of your favorite tones and name them something like "MyFavTone.m4r" and "MyFavTone.m4A".

Obviously, name them to whatever's clever, but the purpose is to see if both file formats will work in iOS 17.

By al-Salil on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

I was hoping Apple would fix SIRI voices auto-deleting but no luck there.
I'm now running iOS 17.2 and all my SIRI voices I've downloaded to use with VoiceOver gets auto-deleted when I plug my phone to the charger.
I re-downloaded all voices again and when I needed to charge all voices got deleted yet again after charging for a while.
F***ing annoying to say the least.
Here's hoping for iOS 17.3 but not holding my breath.

By Saqib on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

Whenever I play content on Netflix or any other streaming service, the volume keeps dropping temporarily. This bug has been around since the release of IOS17.

By Ekaj on Thursday, December 7, 2023 - 13:35

But only on my Mac and only with the new(est) UK Siri voice. Sometimes when I attempt to choose him from the list of downloaded voices, it defaults to Fred. It seems like this might have something to do with iCloud syncing but don't quote me on that. The first time this happened, the voice defaulted back to Fred and then back to the Siri UK voice. My iPhone is always just to the right of my Mac when not in use and off the charger. I'll be interested to see if this happens with my new phone. Not a big deal though for me at least, as there are many voices from which to choose. Loads more once the eSpeak app has been downloaded/installed.

By Ann Marie B on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

Hi. Thank you Bryan for providing the link for the archived apple ringtones. I have them on files on my iPhone 12 but can't seem to import them to settings. Really want the shelter tone as a text tone. :) Also want to have Zoey premium on my iPhone 12 however that voice isn't available. I backed up the phone to iCloud and now am in the process of restoring it as new in hopes I will have Zoey premium. :)

By Felix on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

Hi all. Could someone help me please? I updated from iOS straight to 17.2 and immediately found out that my PDF book is read as a whole page instead of blocks of text as it used to be in previous iOS versions. This is true for both Books and Files app, and can be extremely inconvenient when pages are large. Is there any workaround/fix?

By Missy Hoppe on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

Thanks again, Brian. I just renamed everything to m4r. it didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would. Everything is perfect now, at least on that front. The only weirdness I have now is that no matter what I do, I can't get new mail notification sounds. I've checked under custom notifications, and everything is as it should be. I'm currently on the phone with Apple, and nothing we've tried is working, so I wonder if no new mail notification sounds are just another shiny new bug we have to contend with.

By Brian on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

What are you using for your new mail sound? I ask because I am using a custom one I purchased from the iTunes Store app and it is working fine on my end.

By Brian on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

Double check your Settings > Notifications and make sure your mail is set to play sounds when you receive notifications (i.e. get a new email).

By CuriousNetEntity on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

Oh, no. I thought disappearing Siri voices was fixed because it didn't happen to me yet with iOS 17.2. This was the bug that was driving me the most insane before the update. I wonder if it will happen to me again, or if the terrible behavior doesn't happen to every device with every version and I've won the bug lottery this time. It's still unacceptable if it is happening to anyone else.

By Holger Fiallo on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

Where in iTunes I can get ringtones for my iPhone. I do a search yet they show nothing. Looking for Leslie Gore yet can not find. Friend found one can not see it in iTunes yet she got it in my phone. It was from Leslie Gore You don't own me.

By Missy Hoppe on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

I'm using one I made on my computer. It worked just fine in the past. Yes, mail is set to play sounds. I even went through all the custom notifications for mail, and they're all set to play sound. When I contacted Apple, they had me switch it to a stock alert tone, but that made absolutely no difference. Reading on other Apple-related forums, it appears that this is a known issue, even if Apple isn't acknowledging it. I'm not sure where else I can check that sounds are enabled; all my accounts specifically say sound, and the sound I want to use is selected, so it's a real mystery. It's set correctly in sounds and haptics as well, so I have no clue.

By Tyler on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

You can access the tone store on your iPhone by going to Settings > Sounds & Haptics, selecting the type of sound you want to change (ringtone, text tone, etc) and double-tapping "Tone store."

on Os 17.1 I was not able to do a pairing with a Vario ultra 40 braille display.
In iOs 17.2 there is a partial fix.
When doing the pair the iphone gives an error while the display menu says connected.
But if I tap again on Vario ultra in the voiceover braille menu the connection works.

So the lesson is: don't stop after an error! :)

By Magic Retina on Thursday, December 14, 2023 - 13:35

Apologies for the derail, but you still have a vario Ultra?! That was the best notetaker I ever had and I still miss it dearly.

By Mister Kayne on Sunday, December 31, 2023 - 13:35

I am sorry to report this is still happening to me, Siri voices even after being downloaded disappear I have an iPhone 12 on 17.2. Some of my automations in the shortcut app. are screwed and I tried everything under the sun to fix it but no luck
