At the end of each month, members of the AppleVis Editorial Team take a look at all the apps that have been posted to the site during that month—either for the first time, or where there has been a significant update—and decide which of these they think is the most noteworthy.

The AppleVis Editorial Team app picks of the month for August 2014 are as follows:

1. The Ensign

New Release (now updated to Version 1.27); August, 2014.

"Have to survive. The war's not over.

The Ensign is a Prequel to the critically acclaimed experience: A Dark Room iOS.

It is strongly recommended that you complete A Dark Room before playing The Ensign.

Words from the creator of The Ensign, Amir: 'I really loved traversing the Dusty Path (more so than balancing an economy and upgrading gear). This prequel is a brutally difficult rendition of the Dusty Path that covers the events directly before A Dark Room. I wanted to make a strategy game that had high replay value, as opposed to a game about discovery. Best of luck to whoever attempts this game. I imagine few will succeed in completing all of it.'" – App Store

From the AppleVis Editors: We love that the developer spent so much time making his first game, "A Dark Room," fully accessible to VoiceOver users. "The Ensign" uses a similar interface, so all the great accessibility from that game is on display in this new one. Oh, and yes, the description is right: this game is challenging! Visit the App Store Page for The Ensign

2. AudioSpeed

New Release (now updated to Version 1.01); August, 2014.

"The Seei"Fly your starship on the assigned route at the highest possible speed! Orbits of steel… Maximum power to the jet engines… Anti-gravity systems functioning at 100%... The crushing pressure of the hyperspeed!" – App Store

From the AppleVis Editors: The developers behind the mind boggling and incredible Audio games "The Inquisitor Audiogame Adventure," "The Inquisitor 2 Audiogame Adventure - The Village," and "Inquisitor's Heartbeat" Now bring another game to add to their already stunning collection of games for the Visually Impaired Community. They continue to provide incredible, richly detailed audio games that are fully accessible to VoiceOver users. Visit the App Store page for AudioSpeed

3. Frotz

Updated to version 1.7; August, 2014.

"Burned out on all the new-fangled graphics and dazzling eye candy on your shiny new iPhone or iPad? Nostalgic for a simpler time? Then take advantage of those crisp high-resolution fonts to relive the glory days of the Great Underground Empire, or play any of hundreds of great works from the Interactive Fiction archive." – App Store

From the AppleVis Editors: Version 1.7 of Frotz brings a new UI makeover with support for iOS 7 and iOS 8, all the while maintaining full accessibility; VoiceOver was even mentioned specifically in the release notes for this version. A wonderful classical genre of games is still alive and kicking! Visit the App Store page for Frotz
