BC4000 - Civilization Model (iOS/iPadOS, Free)

The BC4000 APP is a turn-based strategy game. You take on the role of the ruler of a civilization, attempt to build an empire in competition with other civilizations. The game begins in 4000 BC, before the Bronze Age, and can last through to AD 2100 with Space Age.

Along with the larger tasks of exploration, warfare and diplomacy, you have to make decisions about where to build new cities, which improvements or units to build in each city, when to expand your empire by new settlers, and how to transform the land surrounding the cities for maximum benefit. From time to time your cities may be harassed by units from other nations or barbarians. You should protect borders and maintain zones of control.

You can gain a large advantage if your civilization is the first to learn a particular technology and put it to use in a military or other context. Since only one technology may be researched at any given time, the order in which technologies are chosen makes a considerable difference in the outcome of the game and generally reflects your preferred style of gameplay. Please carefully consider about forms of government, tax rates and research priorities.

You can also build Wonders of the World after obtaining the prerequisite knowledge. These wonders are important achievements of society, science, culture and defense, ranging from the Pyramids and the Great Wall in the Ancient age, to Copernicus' Observatory and Magellan's Expedition in the middle period, up to the Apollo program in the modern era. Each wonder can only be built once in the world, and requires a lot of resources to build, far more than most other city buildings or units. Wonders provide unique benefits to the controlling civilization. For example, Magellan's Expedition increases the movement rate of naval units.

The game can be won by conquering all other civilizations or by winning the space race by reaching the star system of Alpha Centauri.

Current Version: 1.7.5 (October 30, 2022)

Changes in October
  • Fix voiceover issue when run on iOS 16
  • Added several new maps
  • Support to boost research progress
  • List all completed research

A Quick Guide to the System Settings App in macOS Ventura

By Tyler | October 24, 2022

In macOS Ventura, Apple replaced the familiar System Preferences app with a new app called System Settings. This app is fully accessible with VoiceOver, however the interface is quite different and many settings have been relocated, which may at first be disorienting to longtime Mac users. However, the new layout may feel familiar if you’ve used iOS or iPadOS, and you may eventually find that the increased parody between the two platforms makes the experience of locating and changing settings easier and more predictable on both of them.

Like System Preferences, the System Settings app can be accessed most conveniently from the Apple Menu, and can also be accessed via the Applications folder and various individual panels in the Control Center and Status menus. Once opened, you’ll be focused on a table of setting categories, many of which mirror the top level of the Settings app on iOS and iPadOS. The settings for each category are contained in a scroll area to the right of the table, and for added convenience, you can jump into the scroll area for a given category by focusing on it in the table and pressing VO-J. In addition, some setting categories are organized by heading, allowing you to select a category in the table and jump to a heading within the scroll area by pressing VO-Command-H.

Directly editing text under Braille Screen Input without moving the rotor

By Paweł Masarczyk | October 9, 2022

One thing that Braille Screen Input apps for Android, the likes of Soft Braille Keyboard or Advanced Braille Keyboard, seem to have mastered very well is the ability to write text and then simultaneously navigate and edit it without leaving the keyboard's interface. Under iOS, it seems, it is necessary to leave the BSI mode in order to find the desired granularity using the rotor, spot the places where corrections are necessary only to return to BSI once again to type whatever we wanted to in the first place. This sounds pretty tedious and I personally resort to making the corrections using the standard on-screen keyboard. It turns out, however, that there are gestures that allow for direct navigation and editing of the text written using Braille Screen Input and this tutorial serves to demonstrate how to use them. I haven't found this being mentioned anywhere else so I hope I am not reopening the same door again.

Identify Common Errors in Text with the VoiceOver Text Checker on macOS

In this podcast, Tyler demonstrates the VoiceOver Text Checker on macOS, a feature that identifies common errors in typed text such as misspellings, repeated spaces, and misplaced capital letters.

This feature can be accessed via Keyboard Commander, and by default is mapped to the letter D. When in a text field, pressing this command should present menus for the types of errors identified in the text, such as misspellings, white space, etc.
