Welcome to the November 2024edition of AppleVis Unlimited, your monthly digest of the latest and most notable content on the AppleVis website. This edition features a curated selection of community-submitted content, including new app entries; updates; news; how-to guides; popular discussions; and podcasts.

An Opening Thought

November 2024 was another exciting month at AppleVis, with more on the way. During November, we released the results of our 2024 Community Survey, which provided us valuable and much-appreciated insight about where we are doing well and where we can do better. We also launched our Community Blog Program and soon thereafter published our first blog submission from a member of the community.

Later this month, we will hold voting for our annual AppleVis Golden Apple Awards. The Golden Apples is an opportunity for our community to recognize the apps and developers which have made a significant contribution for blind, DeafBlind, and low vision users in a given year. We are making some exciting changes to the Golden Apple Awards this year, and we will share more details when voting goes live towards the middle of the month.

Wishing you peace, joy, and every good thing this holiday season,

The AppleVis Editorial Team Www.AppleVis.com A proud member of the Be My Eyes family

Staying Oriented: Using AI-Powered Apps as a tool for further Independence

By Deborah Armstrong | November 19, 2024

I remember the first time I used Seeing AI to help me in the airport. I had 45 minutes to get from my gate to my connecting flight. I knew I could have asked the airline for assistance, but previous experience has been quite frustrating. I often got stuck simply sitting and waiting for someone to guide me to my next gate. Often, they arrived with a wheelchair and I had to argue that it wasn't a good idea since I had concerns about the chair rolling on my guide dog's toes!

Instead, I had Seeing AI set to detect text, and I simply took off waving the phone around. Sure enough, it read me gate signs. When I heard gate 11 and then gate 10, I knew I was going the wrong way, since I needed gate 29. I turned around, told my dog "Forward," and we headed past gates 10, 11, 12, etc. Guess what! We did get to gate 29 only ten minutes later with 35 minutes to spare.

The 2024 AppleVis Community Survey: A Summary of the Results and Looking Ahead

By AppleVis | November 7, 2024

In October 2024, we launched our first-ever AppleVis Community Survey. The purpose of the survey was to seek your feedback about your experience using AppleVis and how we can serve you better in the coming year.

Our partnership with Be My Eyes has opened up opportunities to grow the AppleVis website in new and exciting ways that were previously out of reach for us. In this post, we wanted to give you an overview of the survey results and a sneak peek at where AppleVis is going next.

The 2024 AppleVis Community Survey ran from October 7, 2024 to October 21, 2024. The survey was 10 questions in length and covered the following topics:

  • Respondents’ overall experience using AppleVis and the resources we offer;
  • The editorial content we produce regarding Apple software and hardware releases;
  • The climate/tone on our forums and other discussion areas of the website;
  • Respondents’ ideas for possible new website features in 2025;
  • Respondents’ likeliness to recommend AppleVis to people who are blind, DeafBlind, or who have low vision; and
  • Any other feedback respondents would like to provide to our leadership team

Below is a summary of the results from the 2024 AppleVis Community Survey:

  • 96% of respondents are satisfied with their overall experience using AppleVis.
  • 94% of respondents are satisfied with the editorial content (blogs and podcasts) AppleVis produces regarding software and hardware releases.
  • 72% of respondents are satisfied with the climate/tone on our forums and other discussion areas of the website.
  • Our Net Promoter Score (NPS) is 90. NPS is expressed as a simple number (rather than a percentage) and the score can range from -100 to 100, with higher numbers being more favorable.

Apple Releases iOS 18.1.1, iPadOS 18.1.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 with security fixes

By AppleVis | November 19, 2024

Apple has today released iOS 18.1.1, iPadOS 18.1.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.1, addressing several security vulnerabilities, including some that Apple believes may have been actively exploited.

As iOS 18.1.1, iPadOS 18.1.1, and macOS Sequoia 15.1.1 were not distributed to external testers prior to their release, we do not have any information on whether they contain any accessibility fixes for blind, def blind, or low vision users at the time of writing. However, as these updates appear to have been released to address a small number of specific issues, we do not expect them to contain any such fixes.

In this guide, I will give an overview of some of the security, privacy, and anti-malware features included in macOS, in order to give you a clearer understanding of what you should and shouldn’t use in your situation. Keep in mind that this guide is not intended as a technical deep dive, nor is it intended to advise on a specific security threat that you may encounter. Rather, it is intended as a simple explainer of numerous features built into macOS that aim to keep your Mac, data, and online accounts reasonably private and secure.

Hi Dennis,

Thank you for letting us know about this. We are checking into the cause and will let you know when we have an update.

Thank you, Dennis, for bringing this to our attention! We reached out to Sero to address how we could get AppleVis back on the Sero Podcast segment in the app. It turns out that some of the security enhancements we implemented on AppleVis caused issues with Sero's ability to pull our podcast feed. The issue has now been resolved, and I just checked—AppleVis is once again available in the Sero Podcast segment.
