Apple releases iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2; Bringing Fixes and Refinements for VoiceOver and Braille Users
By AppleVis | December 11, 2024
Apple has today released iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2 to the public; bringing several accessibility fixes and feature refinements for blind, DeafBlind, and low vision users. iOS 18.2 also brings Siri and Writing Tools integration with ChatGPT, Genmoji, Image Playground, and Image Wand to Apple Intelligence-capable devices; as well as Visual Intelligence to iPhone 16 models.
For VoiceOver and braille users, our experience is that the following accessibility bugs have been resolved or meaningfully improved in iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2:
- Summaries in the Mail app can now be read with VoiceOver when double-tapping the "Summarize" button.
- On iOS 18.2, it is once again possible to place apps into folders using the actions rotor. However, this issue is still believed to be present on iPadOS.
- There is now a "Dismiss popup" button in the screen for choosing an app or shortcut as a Lock Screen quick action, allowing the user to easily dismiss the popup and complete the process.
- VoiceOver now speaks search results when performing a T9 search in the Keypad tab of the Phone app.
- VoiceOver now offers better spoken feedback when activating Type to Siri with a four-finger swipe down.
Apple releases macOS Sequoia 15.2, tvOS 18.2, and HomePod software 18.2
By AppleVis | December 11, 2024
Apple has today released macOS Sequoia 15.2, tvOS 18.2, and HomePod software 18.2 to the public.
As with iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2, macOS Sequoia 15.2 brings Siri and Writing Tools integration with ChatGPT, Image Playground, and some accessibility fixes for blind, DeafBlind, and low vision users.
Our experience is that the following accessibility bugs have been resolved or meaningfully improved in this release:
- VoiceOver's notifications menu now correctly shows alert notifications.
- VoiceOver's "Speak Wi-Fi status" command once again reports the name of the connected network.
Additionally, we are currently aware of the following new bug in macOS Sequoia 15.2:
- Unlike other menus and system dialogs in macOS, it is not possible to dismiss the Weather status dialog in the menu bar using the Escape key. To dismiss the dialog, press VO-M to reveal the menu bar, and then press the Escape key to return to the active window. Alternatively, if you have multiple apps open, pressing Command-Tab to switch to a different app will work to dismiss the dialog.

A Warning to VoiceOver Users Regarding Volume Issues in watchOS 11.2
By AppleVis | December 11, 2024
Update: A member of our community has shared a workaround for the volume issue discussed below. This involves using the new Volume item in the Control Center to raise the system's master volume. While this is a reliable workaround for those who are already on watchOS 11.2, we stand by our recommendations in the original post.
Original Post:
Apple announced that today they will be releasing iOS 18.2 to the public; It is expected that Apple will release the corresponding updates for its other platforms, including watchOS 11.2, as well. This post contains preliminary details about an issue that we believe VoiceOver users need to be aware of prior to installing watchOS 11.2. Because of the inability to downgrade Apple Watch software without sending the device to Apple, we strongly recommend that if you have not already installed watchOS 11.2, that you read this post in its entirety, as well as any comments, before doing so.
During the latter half of the watchOS 11.2 beta cycle, members of the community, as well as our team, identified an intermittent but significant issue with VoiceOver volume that occurs when using Siri or when an alarm activates.
At this point, we need to stress that our understanding of the below issue (and all of the ways it may manifest itself) is limited. It is very possible that we may not understand the full scope of the issue; and it is also entirely possible that there may be an effective workaround that we simply have not identified.
What we do know, both from our internal testing and from reading posts on our Apple Beta Software forum, is that in certain circumstances, VoiceOver volume will decrease significantly. In our own testing, our team encountered this issue mainly when using Siri; or after an alarm (such as the Wake Up Alarm in the Sleep app) is activated. Another member of our community has reported that this issue also occurs when receiving an incoming call.

The Mac's Messages App Explained (For iOS 18, macOS Sequoia)
By Tyler | Updated December, 2024
If you have an iPhone, you’re probably fairly familiar with the Messages app on iOS, using it to send and receive texts, photos, videos, and other files. As part of Apple’s interconnected ecosystem, this capability is also available on macOS.
An example of how the Messages app could be useful on macOS is if you’re working on your Mac and a text comes in. Rather than stop what you’re doing and switch devices to view and respond to the message, you could simply open the Notification Center or Messages app on your Mac, view and respond to the message, and get back to your original task.
While certain aspects of the Messages app’s interface may initially seem confusing, there are a number of tricks, which I will cover in this guide, which you can use to maximize your efficiency with it. In fact, being able to do tasks like calling and texting seamlessly on both my Mac and my iPhone is one of my favorite cross-device integration features.
