Microsoft Soundscape (iOS, Free)

Microsoft Soundscape uses 3D audio technology to enhance your awareness of what is around you, and thereby help you get around and explore your surroundings.

Soundscape will place audio cues and labels in 3D space such that they sound like they are coming from the direction of the points of interest, parks, roads and other features in your surroundings.

You will need a pair of stereo headsets that you feel comfortable wearing outdoors. For example, bone conduction headsets, Apple AirPods and in-ear open headphones have proven to work well.

Soundscape is designed to live in the background and provide you with effortless ambient awareness. Therefore, feel free to use it in conjunction with other apps such as podcasts, audio books, email and even GPS navigation.

Key features:

  • As you walk, Soundscape will automatically call out the key points of interest, roads and intersections that you pass. These can be adjusted and turned on and off.
  • An audio beacon can be placed on a point of interest, and you will hear it as you move around. You can place an audio beacon on a point of interest that you would like to track such as your destination, a point to return to or a landmark you are familiar with.
  • “My location” describes your current location and the direction you are facing.
  • "Nearby Markers" describes nearby places you have marked.
  • “Around me” describes nearby points of interest in each of the four cardinal directions, helping with orientation. Try this out when getting off a bus or leaving a train station.
  • “Ahead of me” describes points of interest in front of you, for example when walking down the street.
  • The expandable Callout History section lets you review callouts you have heard, repeat callouts, hear more information about them, and more.

Current Version: 1.10.0 (December 17, 2018)

Changes in Version 1.10.0
  • The “My Location” button will now tell you about the approximate street address of your current location when you are located next to a street. When you are walking towards the location you set an audio beacon on, Soundscape will now tell you when it is muting the beacon because you are close to its location.
  • The list of places that loads when you are setting an audio beacon or a marker will now indicate both distance and compass direction to the listed places (where it previously listed distance only).
  • Several small tweaks have been made to Soundscape’s VoiceOver UI to improved clarity. This includes updating the page for editing the names of markers to make it easier to use with VoiceOver, and updating the VoiceOver hints of the buttons at the bottom of the Home screen.
  • As usual, this update includes bug fixes.

Nearby Explorer (iOS, US$79.99)

Nearby Explorer is a full featured GPS app designed for use by people who are blind. Instead of just providing directions, it describes the environment in ways comparable to reading signage or observing road characteristics.

It uses onboard maps, so a data connection is not required, but if you have one, Nearby Explorer supplements the on board map data with crowd collected locations from Foursquare or Google Places. It includes complete maps for the United States and Canada which contain millions of points of interest. The onboard maps are over 4GB in size, so be sure the device you plan to use has enough available space before purchasing.

Nearby Explorer works with any device running iOS version 9 or later, but if the device does not contain its own GPS receiver, like most iPads and iPods, you must use an external GPS receiver. All iPhones contain GPS receivers.

Nearby Explorer works by letting you select from several different location related options about what to announce as you move. These include both typical items like street name and address and specialized options like approaching streets, intersection configurations, and nearby places and the distance and direction to them. (All announcements are optional.) All of this information is shown on the home screen and is available at any time, but typical use is to adjust the level of announcements, then lock the screen and put the device away. This keeps both hands free and let's your preferred voice speak the characteristics of the environment as you move.

You may also use the devices position and orientation to obtain additional targeted details such as pointing the end of the device to scan for businesses, even in a moving vehicle, or tilting it vertically to function as a compass, including a listing of streets in the indicated direction. This all works with the device locked, so one need not fuss with the touch screen while moving. You may even mark a point, then use the position of the device to get haptic feedback about that point's location.

Current Version: 1.27.0 (December 19, 2018)

Changes in Version 1.26.0-1.27.0
  • Brings back support for Foursquare as a search provider.
  • Corrects a problem where context menus were not automatically spoken when using iOS 12.1.1.
  • Adds two new items to the Home screen, Description and Blind Description. These items are only used when OpenStreetMap is the Search Provider. These fields display information from OpenStreetMap which is tagged with the names Description and Blind Description. While these descriptions are relatively rare at this time, they can be used either to complement a POI, or to give information about a point on the map which is not a POI.
  • Adds the Update Map button to the toolbar. This button updates the onboard OSM map for the current region if a map is available. This feature is most useful when using the Indoor Explorer feature to ensure you have the latest map for a supported building.
  • Adds the Move Less and Move More buttons to Navigation mode. These buttons change the movement distance for the navigation buttons, instead of always moving 20 yards.
  • No longer reports the distance to an object when that distance rounds to zero.
  • Fixes a crash which could occur when using OpenStreetMap as the Address Provider, and moving off of land.
  • Adds support for KST beacons to the Ad Hoc Beacons feature.
  • Clears Approaching Street information when entering Indoor mode.
  • Fixes a bug in the Map View where zooming the map usually paused nearby updates.
  • Fixes a bug where the prompt to rate the app commonly appeared at startup when running on iOS 12.

By AppleVis | December 17, 2018

We are pleased to announce the winners of the seventh annual AppleVis Golden Apple Awards.

Since their launch in 2012, the AppleVis Golden Apple Awards have afforded blind and low vision users of Apple products the opportunity to recognize and acknowledge the hard work and dedication which developers have put into making and maintaining great and accessible applications over the given year. The response of past nominees and winners to this recognition from blind and low vision users shows how winning an AppleVis Golden Apple has become a tremendous honor.

Voting for the 2018 AppleVis Golden Apple Awards was held between December 8 and December 14, 2018. Voting was open to all blind and low vision users who are not employed by any of the shortlisted companies.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the developers who were shortlisted for an award. Without exception, all of the shortlisted apps were worthy nominees - as demonstrated by the significant number of votes each received. All of the developers showed a strong commitment to improving the lives of blind and low vision users in 2018, and our appreciation for their efforts cannot be overstated.

Review of Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind

By Michael Feir | December 19, 2018

Years in the making, Six Ages is technically a prequel and spiritual successor to King of Dragon Pass. David Dunham produced, designed and programmed Six Ages. He Reassembled a number of people who worked on King of Dragon Pass in order to build on that game's wonderful legacy. Robin D. Laws was the head writer on the project. By his calculation, there are over nine novels worth of text packed into this game. Stan LePard took charge of sound and composed music for Six Ages as he also did for King of Dragon Pass. A number of the testers and quality control people were drawn from those who helped make King of Dragon Pass the marvel that it is. These people included Zachary Kline who helped make certain that the game was fully accessible to users of VoiceOver.

Six Ages: Ride Like the Wind, is the first in a planned series of six similar and related games taking your clan through ages of Gloranthan history. It seems as though these future games will be aded into the Six Ages app as they are ready. King of Dragon Pass is still a favourite game for me so I was very eager to get my hands on Six Ages when it was released in the Summer of 2018. It improves upon and surpasses King of Dragon Pass in many ways when it comes to accessibility. Blind people are treated to a specially crafted exploration system which eliminates the need to deal with the hex map. Contextual help is provided for all game screens. Also, textual descriptions are included for the many hand-drawn scene pictures and other art present in the game. These are still a work in progress with game updates incorporating more of these descriptions along with other game improvements.
