New and Noteworthy App Entries

Ballyland Stay Still, Squeaky! (iOS/iPadOS, US$2.99)

Who doesn’t like to play with paint and mud without getting dirty?

An accessible audio story and game that are fun for all.

Play with paint and mud without getting dirty!

This iPad app is fun for all, while being specifically designed for young children who are blind or visually impaired. A story that responds to touch with audio feedback, while teaching basic iPad skills through cause and effect. Plus the Bonus Game which helps to build spatial awareness on the screen.

FIRST: Enjoy the adventure of Squeaky, the bouncy ball from Ballyland, who tries really hard to stay clean for a visit to his grandmother. Two simple, ‘informal’ gestures, touch and swipe, enable interaction with the story, resulting in Squeaky getting dirtier and dirtier...

THEN: Play the Bonus Game, directing Squeaky on five routes to collect now familiar types of dirt in a specific order. This is a great way to playfully develop finger drag skills and spatial awareness on the screen. Uses ‘touch and hold’. Note that the grid is only for visual support and is not relevant to the gameplay for children who are blind. Love the sound effects!

Current Version: 1.0.0 (June 16, 2018)

Voice Dream Reader for Desktop (macOS, Requires subscription)

Voice Dream Reader lets you listen to PDF documents, Web articles, and eBooks using text-to-speech. Although it is designed for people with visual impairment, dyslexia, ADHD, and other reading challenges, everyone can benefit. Your documents become audiobooks, so you can read while you walk, exercise or do chores. For productivity-minded people, with some practice, you can read at twice your sight-reading speed. Unlike audiobooks, you can highlight, take notes, and see the words as they're spoken to improve comprehension and retention.

Voice Dream Reader for iOS is a 2021 Apple Design Award Winner, and it's been featured by Apple as Best New App and App of the Day in 81 countries. BlindSquare (iOS/iPadOS, US$39.99)

BlindSquare is pioneering accessible navigation both indoors and outdoors. Know where you are, know where you're going, travel with confidence.

BlindSquare is a new solution that combines the latest technology to help the blind with their daily lives. It has been developed in collaboration with blind people and carefully field tested. You need either an iPhone or an iPad to get started. It also supports some additional accessories to enhance the experience.

How does it work?

BlindSquare uses GPS and the compass to locate you. It then gathers information about the surrounding environment from FourSquare. BlindSquare has some unique algorithms to decide what information is the most relevant and then speaks it to you with high quality speech synthesis.

“What's the most popular cafĂ© within 200 meters radius? Where is the post office or the library?”

You can control BlindSquare also through voice commands. The Voice Command feature is a premium service requiring purchase of credits for continuous use. Voice Command Credits are available as an in-app purchase on the App Store.

Using BlindSquare as a GPS solution:

When you start the app, it will start telling you the interesting places and street crossings around you. By changing the radius, you can limit the area you are interested in. You can also search by search term or by category. You can select an interesting place from the search results and perform the following tasks:

  1. Get contact info (address, phone number)
  2. Open twitter feed or restaurant menu (if provided)
  3. Make a phone call
  4. Start tracking the place (BlindSquare will assist you by repeating the distance and the clock face direction)
  5. Start your favourite navigator for turn-by-turn instructions (TomTom, Navigon or Apple Maps)

BlindSquare is aware of when you travel by car, bus or train and starts to report interesting places in front of you (for example, the next stops) and street crossings when you are passing them.

Current Version: 5.34 (April 12, 2022)

Changes in Version 5.34
  • Transportation: Adding Moovit (public transportation guide) integration to Moovit App.
  • Turn by Turn navigation: expanding support of third party navigation, adding GoodMaps Outdoors (principally USA and Canada where supported).
  • A bug fix, correcting an issue with keyboard while using search.
  • Expanded support for Bluetooth hearing aids.

Current Version: 1.4.5 (April 28, 2022)

Changes in Version 1.4.2

We're changing name! We're continuing on our journey to deliver high quality RPGs and that means that we need to strengthen our position in order to keep investing time and energy into what we do. Untold was a name that's difficult for us to trademark, and could be swept away from under our feet at any time. For that reason, we're switching name to "Eldrum", which is the name of the world where our stories take place.

What does it mean? A fair question. The name combines two words from the Swedish language: “eld” (fire) and “rum” (room). It’s a suitable name for the dangerous world in which our stories take place. A world of strife and hardship, where nothing ever stays the same.

So there you have it. ELDRUM. It takes some getting used to. We are going to make the transition during the next few months. Expect to see some changes soon.

Powering up accessibly: a review of the Energrid VS820PD

By Scott Davert | April 7, 2022

As I integrate more technology into my daily routine, one of the challenges I face is providing power to all of the equipment. Along with my iPhone and braille display, I frequently carry other things that need to stay charged such as the external microphone used with my hearing aids. This device is essential, maintaining my ability to communicate with companions or the general public in complex settings. Recent unofficial support for connecting some braille displays to iPhones over USB is yet another reason to have external power as the adapter requires more power than the iPhone itself can supply. In an increasingly connected world, many others are also using more hardware such as Bluetooth keyboards and headsets in order to maintain or even increase their independence. Over the years, I've tried many external battery packs or “power banks” with varying degrees of success. One issue with most power banks on the market is the flashlights which can be turned on by mistake. As someone with no light perception, this can be problematic if I’m seeking to charge a device only to find the power bank completely drained. Similarly, determining the amount of charge left in the power bank also typically relies on lights on the device. I can use an app to get sighted assistance, fire up a light detector app or consult the nearest sighted person. However, that is not always autonomous, convenient or feasible. When I would only charge one or two different devices on these external battery packs, I could mentally track how much juice I had left to some degree. For example, a 20,000 MAH battery pack would charge my iPhone approximately 6 times from 0%, or up to 8 times if the iPhone’s battery was not fully flat when charged. As the demand for USB power increases and my technology needs continue to evolve, keeping track of this math is becoming a complex task. The Energrid VS820PD power bank seeks to address some of these issues and a few more I’ll discuss below.
