The Accessibility Bugs in OS X 10.11 El Capitan: From Serious to Minor
By AppleVis | September 30, 2015
Apple has today released OS X 10.11 El Capitan. As with any major upgrade, it brings a number of exciting new accessibility features, but a number of new bugs have also been introduced. If you have not already upgraded, we strongly recommend that you read this list (and any user-submitted comments posted thereafter) before doing so, as we believe there are a number of bugs present in OS X El Capitan which may have a negative impact on the experience for some VoiceOver users.
At this point, it is worth noting that our testing of OS X 10.11 El Capitan has been somewhat limited; not all of our team uses Macs, and those who do have varying levels of experience. Accordingly, we would greatly appreciate the help of other blind and low vision users--both to confirm whether they are experiencing the same issues we have reported here (or found workarounds), as well as to identify any issues we may have missed.
:Of course, more important is that anyone experiencing accessibility issues submit reports directly to Apple's Accessibility Team by sending an e-mail to Accessibility@Apple.com, as Apple is ultimately the only one who can make these bugs go away. This post explains how to go about reporting accessibility issues to Apple, as well as what information to include in an effective bug report.

The VoiceOver User's Guide to 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s
By Scott Davert | September 27, 2015
3D Touch is arguably one of the biggest features of the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models. Before we get in to specifics about how it works with VoiceOver, I thought it would be helpful to go directly to Apple's 3D Touch webpage to get an overview of exactly what 3D Touch is:
iPhone 6s introduces an entirely new way to interact with your phone. For the first time, iPhone senses how much pressure you apply to the display. In addition to familiar Multi-Touch gestures like Tap, Swipe, and Pinch, 3D Touch introduces Peek and Pop. This brings a new dimension of functionality to the iPhone experience. And when you use 3D Touch, your iPhone responds with subtle taps. So not only will you see what a press can do, youâll feel it.
Continuing in what has now become conventional fashion for Apple, 3D touch is usable for VoiceOver users. There are actually 2 ways to utilize both the Force Touch and the Peek and Pop features, each of which will be discussed below.

Three Hours with the iPhone 6s: a VoiceOver User's Perspective
By Scott Davert | September 26, 2015
There is a very slight difference in the thickness of the iPhone 6s when compared to the 6. And because it's thicker, just like with human beings, that means it weighs slightly more. However, until I held the 6s in one hand and the 6 in another, I couldn't really tell that there was a difference in the weight or girth of the phone. Take this with a grain of salt then, quite literally, as that's about the difference in thickness between the 2 devices. This is good news, though, since it means that most cases designed for the 6 should work on the 6s. That said, with the new 7000 Series aluminum, the phone feels more sturdy in my hand. I haven't tried to bend my phone, since it's new and a device I plan to hold on to for a year or two, but it doesn't feel like it would bend very easily.

Follow-Up: Why I'm Delighted I Held onto my iPhone 5 for One More Year
By mehgcap | September 23, 2015
When the iPhone 6 was announced last year, I wrote a blog post detailing my plans to resist temptation and hang onto my trusty iPhone 5 until the 6s came out. That year has now passed, and the iPhone 6s is here. In re-reading that post, I realized just what a good thing it was that I waited. I'm upgrading my phone this year, and the only question now is: Plus or no Plus?

Apple News, RSS, or Both?
By mehgcap | September 18, 2015
In June, Apple unveiled its News app, which pulls together news from around the web and lets you read it all in one place, like an RSS reader. Unlike traditional RSS services, though, News can get an idea of what sources and topics interest you, then pull articles from everywhere that it thinks relate to the things you like. It's a curated news service, rather than the simple pipe of RSS feeds. In other words, instead of getting every article published by sources you follow, News gives you interesting articles from a wide array of sources.
This approach has a lot of advantages over RSS, but it also has its downsides. Unfortunately, many of us have to choose one or the other; there simply isn't enough time in a day to keep up with high-traffic RSS feeds and Apple News. As you try to figure out what to do, consider the following.

iOS 9's Mainstream Features from a VoiceOver User's Perspective
By mehgcap | September 16, 2015
AppleVis already has posts on iOS 9: we've seen an overview of the new accessibility features, a podcast covering all that iOS 9 brings to the table, a list of bugs in iOS 9, and more. This post, though, is all about the new features that are not accessibility-specific. We'll look at the "back to app" button, Notes feature, and more. Yes, these are all mainstream items, but this post aims to show you how to use them with VoiceOver. I'll go in the same order as Apple's What's New in iOS 9 page.

Whatâs New and Changed in iOS 9 Accessibility for Blind and Deaf-Blind Users
By Scott Davert | September 16, 2015
It's September, and that means my annual reminder that Iâm growing older has arrived. It also means Apple is doing their annual âcoming out with more new stuffâ or in my case, birthday presents. The good news is that if you have been running iOS 8, your device is going to be able to run iOS 9. As a general rule, iOS 9 seems to run about as well as iOS 8 has on other devices, so if you find the features worth upgrading to, go for it.
Just like each year previous to now, there are many mainstream enhancements to iOS 9. Some examples include a new news app, a more advanced Notes app, a new low power mode, and many enhancements to the iPad related to multitasking. This article will not focus so much on these changes, but the less-documented changes related to accessibility features impacting those who are blind or deaf-blind. Without a doubt, there will be other features not documented here that people discover as they get their hands on the new iOS. While I've been running the betas since June, I am certain I will learn even more things about it as the masses get their opportunity to play with it. Please note that this article is not intended as a comprehensive guide to iOS as a whole; rather, it is only designed to document changes in iOS 9 likely to be of particular interest to users who are blind or deaf-blind.
Those of you who pay attention to such things may have realized that I did not include low vision in the title of this article. This, sadly, was not due to an error, but is due to the fact that I did not get what I felt was sufficient feedback from low vision users to comment on the changes related to low vision. As such, it is my hope that someone from the low vision community can cover these features in more detail and with more real life experience than I can. The general comments from those with some vision have been that very little has changed other than the new keyboard enhancement found under Settings/General/Accessibility/Interaction.

Pending Charges: My Life With a Perpetual Eye on my iPhoneâs Battery Level
By Morgan | September 15, 2015
I would rather walk face first through a giant spider web than go shopping. I truly hate walking into large cavernous spaces with grumblings, rumblings, and piercing screeches resounding, rebounding, and reflecting from every surface. I tire of unbridled children pawing at my guide dog, and I could really do without the adults who treat shopping as a contact sport. Make that three giant spider webs that I'd be willing to walk through. If I cannot escape to the parking lot, I mentally retreat and perform my primary function as the designated guardian of the shopping cart and purse.
There is a singular exception to my retail aversion. I love walking into the local Apple Store to touch things. That may sound creepy, but it really isn't. I spent a lot of time holding new iPhones. The iPhone 6 was comfortable and familiar. However, the bigger iPhone 6 Plus called to me. For many months, I went to the Apple Store to make sure that the iPhone 6 Plus was not too big for my hands and that it would still glide into my shirt pocket. You cannot be too careful. Things might have changed. I just needed to be sure.

Apple Confirms Peek and Pop Features of New iPhone 6s Will Be Accessible to VoiceOver Users
By AppleVis | September 12, 2015
Apple this week launched the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. One of the headline features introduced on these is 3D Touch, a slight variation on the Force Touch seen on the Apple Watch and newest MacBooks and heralded by Apple as âthe next generation of multi-touchâ.
Wired offers a good explanation of 3D Touch which we will share here so as to avoid the need to reinvent the wheel:
3D Touch basically enables the phone to measure not just when you move your finger up and down, left and right, but now also through. When you press a little harder, you get whatâs called âPeekââa pop-up of the contents of an email, or the status of a flight, or a quick way to call the business youâre tapping on in Maps. Press more, and you âPop.â Thatâs when you jump to a new place in the operating system. You can press on icons on the homescreen, too, and jump straight to the selfie cam or call your mom without ever actually opening the Phone app.
It was perhaps not surprising that the introduction of a completely new form of interaction sparked some discussion and concern amongst VoiceOver users. As with accessibility support on the new Apple TV, VoiceOver users need not have worried; we are pleased to report that Apple has confirmed to us that the 3D Touch features on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will be accessible to blind and low vision users.
Recap of Apple's 'Hey Siri' Event (September 2015)
By mehgcap | September 9, 2015
It's September again, and that means another media event from Apple. Apple usually uses these to announce the newest iPhones, the release date of the next major versions of iOS and OS X, and any other big secrets it's been hiding. Normally, the iPad gets either a silent update or a smaller event later in the year, but this time, Apple broke with tradition.
Today, at an event entitled "Hey Siri", Tim Cook and friends delightedly showed off a whole range of new products: the iPhone we all expected, but also an updated iPad Mini, an entirely new category of iPad (the 12.9-inch Pro), a new Apple TV, gold and rose gold versions of the Apple Watch Sport, and a set of new Apple Watch bands. Each of these items is a big deal on its own--the Apple Watch color and band choices perhaps less than the rest--and Apple has a great holiday shopping season in store. Let's have a look at everything and see why your wallet may soon be lighter than you'd planned. I know mine will be!

Full-text RSS Reader Shootout: lire vs. Unread vs. Newsify vs. Feeddler Pro 2
By Amir | September 2, 2015
For many of us -- hard-core internet surfers, RSS is a familiar term. By the same token, the phrase "RSS reader" isn't esoteric at all. But let me talk a bit about RSS and RSS readers before moving on to the main focus of this post. According to the Pro Blogger website:
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication." ⊠It is a technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favorite websites. In the "old days" of the web to keep track of updates on a website, you had to âbookmarkâ websites in your browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added. ⊠RSS flips things around a little and is a technology that provides you with a method of getting relevant and up to date information sent to you for you to read in your own time. It saves you time and helps you get the information you want quickly after it was published. ⊠Itâs like subscribing to a magazine that is delivered to you periodically; but instead of it coming in your physical mail box each month when the magazine is published, it is delivered to your "RSS Reader" every time your favorite website updates.
So it's easy to conclude that an RSS reader is an app which allows you to handle your RSS feeds. It collects website updates in the background at user configurable intervals. You can click each article, news headline or website update to see a short description of that post, and click or open the original news webpage in the mini-browser of an RSS reader or in the default browser.
