New and Noteworthy App Entries

Aipoly Vision (iOS, Free)

Aipoly is an object and color recogniser that helps the blind, visually impaired, and color blind understand their surroundings. Simply point your phone at the object of interest and press the large toggle button at the bottom of the screen to turn on the artificial intelligence.

Aipoly will keep running and recognising objects until you switch to a different tab, or toggle the Aipoly button.

Aipoly is suited for both the visually impaired and the sighted.

  • Recognise Objects: Aipoly can recognise a wide variety of objects at a rate of three times a second. Simply switch on the Aipoly button and it will start identifying what it sees through the camera. Recognising objects does not require an internet connection.
  • Recognise Colors: Aipoly can tell up to 954 colors apart. The list can also be simplified to a few through the settings if you are unfamiliar with most color names.
  • Teach Aipoly: Aipoly will learn more object if its users help it by writing descriptions of what it sees. This is a good way for sighted users to help the visually impaired. Press the pencil button once object recognition is toggled on to write a description of the object or scene in focus. Detailed descriptions work best. Over time, Aipoly will begin learning about more items thanks to its users.
  • VoiceOver: For those with VoiceOver switched on, simply access the text above the toggle button. For those who are sighted and do not require VoiceOver, you can access the Speaking Voice setting to listen to what the app can see.
  • Voice Modes: You can switch between different voice modes in the settings page. Ranging from standard, which says one word at a time, to advanced for multiple words, to likelihood and fun, which express the likelihood of the item viewed and add additional captions respectively.
  • Intelligent Torch: When Aipoly detects darkness through the camera, it will automatically turn on the torch so you don't have to worry about lighting. When the light is switched on, it will turn the torch off.

Current Version: 1.1 (January 26, 2016)

Blindfold Word Games (iOS, Free with In-App Purchases)

Blindfold Word Games is a fully accessible word game for both sighted and visually impaired people, designed for rapid audio play.

Word Games includes the games Word Ladder, Word Flick, Hangman and Unscramble.

The objective of Blindfold Word Ladder is to convert one word into another word by changing only one letter a a time. For example, to change the word 'COLD' to 'WARM', you can first change the third letter of COLD from 'L' to 'R', making the word CORD. Then change the second letter of 'CORD', so the new word is 'CARD', then the fourth letter of 'CARD', so the new word is 'WARD'. Finally change the last letter of 'WARD', so the new word is 'WARM'.

In Word Flick, you have a 16 randomly chosen letters arranged in a 4 by 4 grid. You build as many words as possible using adjacent letters. The longer the word, the higher you score. For example, if the top line has the letters C, A, T, S, and the second line has the letters O, L, D, X, you could form CATS from the first line and COLD using the C from the first line, and the O, L, D from the second line.

In Unscramble, you must unscramble the word. The letters L, E, H, O, L unscramble to become the word HELLO.

In Hangman, you must discover the word before using up your moves.

ThirdEye Technologies Inc. (iOS, Free)

We believe in empowering visually impaired individuals. ThirdEye restores autonomy to visually impaired persons’ lives by enabling them to recognize everyday objects. All the user has to do is touch one button and our technology verbally returns back whatever object the user is looking at within seconds (for example a “5 US Dollar Bill” or an “Ibuprofen bottle”). We have a database of millions of images that is being updated every day and thus our product is able to recognize a wide array of images very specifically.

ThirdEye is currently free to download!

Features:

  • Press the “Recognize This” button while holding your phone in front of an object you want to recognize, and then wait a couple of seconds for ThirdEye to return the object to your ear. The button is large, and occupies half the screen so it’s easy to find and press.
  • Press the raise volume button on the side of your phone while the app is on to Activate the “Recognize This” feature.
  • Every time you press a button, ThirdEye will read aloud the button you pressed (to ensure that you pressed the button you wanted to).
  • Returns a Alert Message warning you if the item you recognized could be potentially dangerous (such as medicine) and to ask for help before taking the medicine. (Note: Please note that this alert message will be triggered on every potentially dangerous item simply because of the sheer number of potentially dangerous items; we have done our best to try to add as many objects as we think could be dangerous, but you should use your own judgement)
  • Currently, the read this feature works with larger text, but it is still under development. We're still displaying this text, but if you press it, you'll hear a message saying "this feature is till under development."

Managing your Finances from your iOS Device: a Snapshot of how I Believe Things are now, and what I hope they Could Become

By Mike Taylor | January 17, 2016

Until 3 or 4 years ago, I did most of my financial dealings over the phone or using my bank’s website. Although more recently I have used the app for 99 percent of my dealings involving finances (in fact, I prefer the app more than the website), the app has some problems. Due to the world population going more mobile than ever before, financial institutions as well as other industries are forced to embrace the digital age or get left behind. But what is the result for blind iOS users, and how can things change for the better?

These are my own views as a totally blind iOS user, although I am interested to find out how other users find money management through their iOS device. Please feel free to comment and confirm or squash my suspicions. I also apologise in advance, because the politics surrounding the arena of accessibility go further than the title of this post, I haven’t edited these out though as I believe them to be just as important so hope you can appreciate and comment on these points if you would like to.

The Guy in the Spider’s Web
An Overview of Creating a Website with WordPress and a Screen Reader

By Niall Gallagher | January 14, 2016

This blog post is going to focus on providing an overview of creating a website, and discussing the usability and accessibility of the WordPress software. For those who feel they do not have the technical skills required to complete such a task, don't worry, it is very easy to create a website on the internet.

The entire process of creating a website can be completed in a matter of minutes, as there are only 3 necessary steps. The first and second step are by far the most straight forward, and you will spend a lot more time on the third, you will understand why if you read on.

Small Treasures: A New Mac Mini and Dropbox Protect my iPhone Universe

By Morgan | January 13, 2016

My digital world is beautiful, in large part, because I have been able to collect and protect the memories and experiences of a lifetime. I have huge electronic piles of my own writing, sound files from when my son was growing up, a massive library of accessible books, along with thousands of old radio shows and other valued mementos. I have recordings of my brother and sisters singing "The Signs of New Math" in the mid-1960's and I have oral histories of both my parents. I have audio recordings of lectures, plays, and some of the many speeches I have delivered. My large trove of small treasures has moved from reel-to-reel tape, to cassettes, to floppies, to writable CDs, and finally to hard drives.

When it comes to protecting my precious memories, I worry quite a bit. Bad things happen to good data. When I studied computer science, we were constantly reminded that there were only two kinds of computer users; those who have lost data and those who will. In my world view, there is no absolutely secure way to store information. If you write everything to a hard drive, it will fail. If you copy it to a second drive, the transfer will fail and leave you with two corrupted disk images. If you have successfully duplicated your primary drive, there will be a fire, a break-in, or a nuclear mishap. In almost every backup scheme, there are numerous points of potential failure.

Warning: there’s some really cool stuff in here that may cause you to drool uncontrollably. Got your napkins ready? Good, let’s get started!

Beginners’ Guide to the iPhone

In this series of introductory podcasts, Thomas Domville discusses and demonstrates various features of the iPhone. New in the BGI series this month:

An Overview and Demonstration of the iPad Pro, Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil

In this podcast, David Woodbridge gives us a physical description and introduction to the iPad Pro; along with Apple’s Smart Keyboard and Pencil.

David notes that to perform the Quick Nav VoiceOver command with the Smart Keyboard you use the Left/Up/Right keys, and not Up/Down as it is with a standard bluetooth keyboard (this is due to the moulding of the Up and Down keys into one key). In addition, because the Smart Keyboard has no Escape key, Control+Option+Accent performs the Escape VoiceOver function (this can be used on bluetooth keyboards as well).

David shows us how to activate and use Split Screen mode using either the keyboard or touch screen. David also demonstrates some of the multi-tasking gestures which can be used on an iPad.

David demonstrates how the Apple Pencil can be used in conjunction with the Handwriting mode which is available to VoiceOver users as a method of inputting text.

David concludes by showing us how to use the Smart Keyboard as a cover for the iPad Pro.

Note that the Smart Keyboard and Pencil are sold separately to the iPad Pro.
