Apple has today released iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 to the public, bringing new emoji, enhancements to Apple Music, including AI playlist creation and a new Apple Music widget, several accessibility enhancements, and more.
Accessibility Changes for Blind, Deaf Blind, and Low Vision Users
New Features and Changes
iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 include the following new features for blind, deaf blind, and low vision users:
- Touch Curtain prevents the touch screen from receiving any input when a braille display is connected, which may be useful in preventing accidental touches from performing unintended actions. This can be toggled on and off by pressing Space with dots one, two, three, four, five, six, and eight on a Perkins Style Keyboard, and similar to Sound Curtain, can be turned off by pressing both volume buttons for five seconds. This feature can also be toggled in Settings>Accessibility>VoiceOver>Braille.
- New commands to move to the next and previous text field have been introduced. These commands have no default touch or keyboard assignments, but can be mapped in Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Commands> All Commands > Advanced Navigation. For users of Perkins-style keyboards, these can be configured by going to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver > Braille, focusing on the device name, and selecting the "Commands" rotor action.
- There is a new "reduce bright effects" toggle designed to "minimize highlighting and flashing when interacting with onscreen elements," according to Apple. This feature can be found in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size. Our team has not been able to independently verify the efficacy of this setting.
- Improvements have been made to the Reduce Motion option to more reliably reduce animation of Liquid Glass elements. Our team has not been able to independently verify the efficacy of this change.
New Bugs
We are currently aware of one new accessibility bug in these releases:
- The lyrics for the currently playing song in Apple Music are no longer accessible with VoiceOver, with only the word "button" being spoken in their place. We would like to thank AppleVis user KE8UPE for bringing this issue to our attention via our Community Bug Program.
Resolved Bugs
Our experience is that the following accessibility bug has been resolved in iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4:
Additionally, our testing suggests that when typing text with a braille display, there has been a marginal improvement in the issue where letters are lost.
If you notice any further changes, improvements, or regressions in your use of these releases, please post a comment below with your findings.

How to Update
iOS 26.4 and iPadOS 26.4 are available via Over-the-Air Update (Settings > General > Software Update), via Finder on a Mac with macOS Catalina or later, or via iTunes on a PC or Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier.
Before updating, we strongly recommend making a full and complete backup of your device (either locally or in iCloud, depending on personal preference). This will ensure that, in the unlikely event that something goes wrong during the update process, you will have a current backup on hand in case a device restore becomes necessary. Also, if using OTA update, we recommend plugging your device into a power source for the duration of the download/installation process, so as to prevent the unlikely event of your battery going dead during the update.
Comments
the constant speaking of the time while on a call is fixed
The subject says it all.
Are you for reals?
That's one of those longtime bugs that has been around four, freaking, ever. Very glad to see that one gone. 😁
You made my night
You made my night, updating now.
Eloquence TTS Community Dictionary has been somewhat fixed
The subject says it all. Yes iOS and macOS is still broken in the Community dictionary, but the good news is after I updated my phone in the afternoon it now correctly reads all the contact names correctly. Also I noticed in macOS that it now reads the time and date correctly just like on iOS without any extra gap or pauses in between the reading.. I also noticed that navigation in Safari is back to normal meaning that when you press VO command H to move to link it now reads it a lot faster whereas in previous versions it seemed a bit slow and there was a gap between reading the links. That's no longer the case.
Finally!
I think i'm going to update just for that, it was really distracting having the duration of the call continueasly read out.
Looks good so far on my iPhone 15
It looks good so far on my iPhone 15. I’ll have to do my iPhone SE third generation tomorrow as I’ll be near Wi-Fi and I don’t have Wi-Fi in my house. But it looks pretty good so far. I’ll come back on here and let you guys know how it goes with the iPhone SE third generation once I’m done updating it tomorrow. Any of the new accessibility features or things that I won’t use I don’t use Braille with any of my devices, but I think it’s good for people to do.
Voiceover not reading lyrics in Apple Music
I discovered if I turn on screen recognition, I can read the lyrics to a song otherwise it just shows you a button speaks button button button button, but if you turn screen recognition on, you can see the lyric. I hope this helps someone.
VoiceOver not reading the elements for lyrics in Apple Music
Turn screen recognition on, and you will be able to hear or see the lyric to your song. I hope this helps.
touch curtain
I am able to turn on and off the touch curtain with a display but is there a way to turn it on or off by any other means? I tried Siri and it does not understand. Holding the volume buttons does seem to work.
braille display command and you can customize agesture
Yes, you can press space with dots 1-2-3-4-5-6-8 on a Perkins keyboard, or you can also assign the Touch Curtain a gesture by going to Settings>Accessibility>VoiceOver>Commands>All Commands>VoiceOver>Touch Curtain and assign the feature a gesture there. I hope this helps.
Something fun and interesting with the native Mail app
I’ve updated my iPhone 15 to iOS 26.4. In the native Apple Mail app if you don’t have any emails in your inbox, you will now hear voiceover say no messages instead of no mail. I just didn’t. That was an interesting change. I kind of like it. I’m assuming that that’s just a new feature of the software? I will be on Wi-Fi connection tomorrow so I can update my iPhone SE third generation and see how the update goes on there. I just thought that was an interesting new change. I do wish it was more like the regular text messaging app where you could just open up app to see if there were any messages in service saying no I’m unread emails, especially because some of the times they’re actually our emails in their even if it doesn’t mention it. I know it’s been a bug for a while now. But I kind of like that new feature of it saying no messages instead of no mail.
New voiceover bug
Nobody told me that as soon as I update my phone to this version of IOS, I’ll no longer see what apps my notification are coming from…. 😠
touch curtain
Is there a way to disable the alert when turning on the touch curtain since i have done it a few times now? I do really enjoy this especially when say phone is in pocket. The interesting thing is pressing the volume up and down buttons, also turns on speech as well as turning off touch curtain.
Found a VoiceOver bug
When updating apps in the App Store, VoiceOver reads two progress bar numbers, for example, "Installing 70%, 30%." After the app update is complete, VoiceOver continues to read "Installing" followed by a percentage. It feels like iOS 26 always has some minor bugs in the App Store.
Gentle reminder
Please check before commenting on things that have been posted before. I reported this again a couple of weeks ago and yes it isn't fixed. Dave one of the Mods came up with what he thought the 2nd number was. Think he thought it was download speed which on my phone was certainly not obvious.
longma
I never had VO doing so? Does this happen in the app store? I am trying to remember if I ever heard VO doing so, do not recall. LLC.
Holger
Yes if you have app updates set to manual you can check on them as they download. Will say loading, then installing and at that point you get the two numbers. Very odd. I've also noticed if you have a bunch of apps to update and you scroll through some of them may say open rather than update. Yet clicking on the ones that say open will then still update them.
Everything looks good on my iPhone SE
I just updated my iPhone SE third generation two iOS 26.4. Everything looks good on that update as well. It’s at the same interesting new feature with the native mail app so it says no messages now instead of no mail. I actually prefer that. Good job with this update Apple.
@Lee
Gentle reminder about . . . what? I've seen tons of "me too" posts. Are you saying these should stop?
Well, um, why? Aren't we interested in learning of some folks have the problem and others don't? I'm sure interested, particularly if it boils down to some phone models do have the problem and others do not.
Lee
Do have it manually but never heard in my iPhone. I mostly just tap on update and forgot about it. The only time VO tells me if I go to wherever app I am doing it and it tells me. Is that what are you talking about? LLC.
Lee's statement is very accurate
Sometimes the "Update" button is incorrectly read as "Open," an issue that has persisted for several versions now. The problem of reading two progress bar numbers was only introduced in 26.4, and I am certain it is not indicating the download speed. There is a very simple way to verify this: wait until the app update is finished, and you will still hear one of the numbers.
The lyrics reading feature is working normally
By the way, I haven't encountered any issues with VoiceOver reading lyrics here; everything is working as expected. The "Lyrics" button is read out correctly, and the content of the lyrics is also read normally. I'm not sure if this bug is specific to certain languages, but I am using Simplified Chinese. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.
