Apple today introduced the iPhone 16e, bringing a 6.1-inch display, Face ID, USB-C, the A18 chip, an upgraded camera, and more to the company's lowest-cost iPhone model. With the new design and display size, Apple no longer sells iPhone models with Touch ID or a physical Home button.
With a starting price of US$599, the iPhone 16e replaces the iPhone SE and iPhone 14 in Apple's lineup. Curiously, however, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, which includes the Dynamic Island and MagSafe, but lacks a chip capable of supporting Apple Intelligence, remains available for US$699.
The iPhone 16e is powered by the latest-generation A18 chip, the same chip that powers the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. With this upgrade, the iPhone 16e will support Apple Intelligence, making the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus the sole remaining models in the iPhone lineup to lack this capability. In addition to the A18 chip, the iPhone 16e includes the Apple C1, the first Apple-designed cellular modem, which Apple describes as "the most power-efficient modem ever on an iPhone."
Similar to the iPhone 14, the iPhone 16E features a notch at the top of the screen, in lieu of the Dynamic Island seen on higher-end iPhones.
The iPhone 16e features up to 80% increased performance and 6 hours longer battery life over the iPhone 11 with A13 Bionic, according to Apple's press release. In addition, Apple claims that the iPhone 16E features 12 hours longer battery life than any iPhone SE.
In addition to the hardware redesign and chip upgrades, the iPhone 16E includes many of the features that have been brought to other iPhone models since the last iPhone SE was introduced in 2022, such as a single-lens 48 MP camera, support for satellite communication features such as Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance, Messages, and Find My, USB-C connectivity, and increased base storage of 128 GB.
The iPhone 16E can be preordered from Apple starting Friday, February 21, for a starting price of US$599, and will start shipping on Friday, February 28.

excellent phone
This is an excellent phone! Now do I get the 256 GB model or the 512 GB model?
The question is…
The question is how long have you had your current iPhone, and how much data, during that time, have you actually consumed? If your answer is less than 100 GB, then 256 GB should be plenty, if you have gone over that amount, then you will need the 512 GB model.
As an example, my current iPhone, SC 2022, has a Mac storage of 256 GB. I have had my phone for 11 1/2 months.
According to Settings, General, About, I have the following currently on my iPhone:
21 videos.
246 photos.
74 applications.
And a total of 199.95 GB of, "free", space.
Granted the videos I have consist mostly of a friend of mine, who loves sending me cute videos of her child, who is a toddler, even though I'm blind she loves showing off her baby. Lol
My point is, however, that you may not need the highest storage space, But if you do, then have at it. ☺️
storage being used
85.39 gb of 256 being used.
applications:
50.9gb
The only thing making me think about the top model is I'm planning to keep it until the next budget iPhone comes out so not sure what I would be better off doing.
Fair enough.
You may end up future proofing yourself, rather than your device, so keep that in mind as well. What I mean is, you may like that phone so much, that you end up keeping it for several years.
It could happen ... 🧐
Disappointment in the ram
I find it interesting that they will give us almost the same exact display size and the same exact chip for performance, but they only increase your RAM slightly
Realize that this model is…
Realize that this model is meant to showcase what Apple is willing to do with a fixed budget. And then rethink your statement on what is included versus what is not included. For the price, it's a pretty sweet deal.
While anybody can get this phone, absolutely anyone, I feel it is more geared toward people like me, those of us who actually enjoyed the benefits of an SE-like model iPhone. After all, this is the next generation of the SC lineup. Even if it has been rebranded.
iPhone 16e has Same Ram as Other iPhone 16 Models
Per MacRumors, the iPhone 16e has the same 8GB of ram as other iPhone 16 models.
you get 8gb of ram
You get 8gb of ram. an excellent buy for the money.
It is.
I liked the SE moddle I had before, I can't remember what it was called though, but at the same time I have to think about it, will it be worth getting. After all I don't really care about the apple AI features, so chances are I'll probably wait for another couple of years, once the support runs out for my Iphone 12, then go for it.
I have high hopes for this, …
I have high hopes for this, "E", model, and future, "E", models. I really, really like the direction Apple has gone with this device.
This will be my next iPhone
Hi! As I have had my second-generation iPhone SE for nearly five years at the time of writing this, I plan to buy myself a 16E before this year is over. The better battery life is definitely a big attraction for me, as is the capacity: I have had to offload and delete apps to be able to install the last few big iOs updates on my 64 GB iPhone, so even 128 GB will be a big improvement. As for Apple Intelligence, it hasn't reached France yet, but when it comes I may want to try out some of its features. I'm not surprised they rebranded this new iPhone, since it has so much more than any SE ever did.
Thanks for clarification
Thank y’all in the community for the clarification on the ram this will be my new iPhone when I obtain a new one if you get a chance to check out and compare the two iPhones comparing it with the iPhone 16 I was impressed that you actually are gonna be getting a little bit better battery life on this new iPhone
As I currently have an…
As I currently have an iPhone 15 pro, this would actually be a step down, aside from the processor.
I'm going to wait for the 17s. I'm hoping the new modem is really going to push the battery. Really, that's all I'm interested in these days.
The more I think about the 16 E, the more I'd say, it's okay, not that amazing. There are compromises, well considered compromises for the most part, and if they'd brought it in at 499, it would have been impressive. Instead of being an excellent cheap phone, it's now the worst of the expensive phones. But, of course, apple know what they're doing.
For now, it's an okay buy. in a year's time, unless they release a 17E, or significantly reduce the cost, it will be a very poor deal, and will continue to degrade in value if they stick to the three year product lifecycle. The naming is interesting though, suggesting some sort of lockstep with the main iPhone life cycle.
I'll report my findings
I'm leaning towards getting one. I'll report my findings.
16E Versus Iphone 13 Pro max?
Now i have an Iphone 13 pro max, so, is it better to trade it with a new Iphone 16E? will it be better?
too expencive for me.
for my money, the 16e is too expencive in the UK for what it will give me over the 2022. I can refresh the batteries in my 2020 and 22 for less and still get use out of them until the ios isn't supported. apple imho should have let people who wanted buy the more powerful 16 models and keep the se 2022, incentivising 20 and 2022 owners to keep their old hardware with discount on battery replacements. this would keep older hardware working for longer and have less impact on environment. I also had a chat with apple about them doing a comparison between phones with a blindness slant, how long would a phone last using voiceover for instance. I know there are variables, but even so. Now adays we can't keep throwing hardware in the bin. and what with the growth of services, the companies can still make ££££££££
They were a bit stuck…
They were a bit stuck. Remember the 2022 SE came with 64 GB,. To get 128 was something like £489, so, including inflation, the uncertainty of Trumple Stilstzkin, maybe an extra £110 isn't too surprising, it's just, to my mind, more like the prices of the main line.
there is an interesting article on Mac rumours where they too were asking if there will be a 17E too, great minds and all that. The conclusion was, apple will probably wait and see about how well this one sells, though I would also imagine Apple plans several years in advance. I'd imagine that, this time next year, when the 17 is out, the 16 standard, will be dropped by £100 liek the 15 has been to £699, at which point the 16E would have to also drop otherwise it will appear a bad deal. Maybe this is their roadmap though.
I'm getting one for my mum, her phone, iPhone 7, no longer runs pretty much anything. She's tech adverse. The reason I'm going for the 16E over the 2022 SE is availability, battery life, and support which, if apple is consistent, will end for the 2022 SE in two to three years, whereas the 16E should get updates for the next five or six.
Sorry, I realise I'm kinda arguing with myself too on this subject.
Re: Battery settings
Please do post your battery settings here. I also use an iPhone SE 2022, and I charge it every other evening most of the time unless I use it extensively for updates (world news).
2022
By the time my SE 2022 is no longer supported, we will be on the iPhone 19 E, or iPhone 20 E. Let us hope these phones do not go the way of the 5C, however.
Anybody remember those?
Those were god-awful!
