At the end of each month, members of the AppleVis Editorial Team take a look at all the apps that have been posted to the site during that month—either for the first time, or where there has been a significant update—and decide which of these they think is the most noteworthy.

One of the great things about iOS devices is the wide array of information available at the user’s fingertips. With an iOS device and an RSS reader—such as our #1 app pick of the month—one can stay current with content from any website that provides an RSS feed.

The AppleVis Editorial Team app pick of the Month for April 2014 is lire (Full-text RSS). Lire allows one to read and cache the full text of RSS articles with ease, and there are many VoiceOver-specific features built into the app. Lire was featured as our app pick for April 2013, and it has been redesigned for iOS 7, universal compatibility—and to add Feedly support. Now, it is possible to synchronize and update your Feedly RSS subscriptions with Lire. Link to lire (Full-Text RSS) in the App Store

Our team’s second app pick for April 2014 is Fleksy Keyboard - Happy Typing, an app which allows one to type more quickly and effectively on an iOS device. After becoming inaccessible in a January update, the Fleksy developers have made significant progress towards restoring full access for VoiceOver users. While Fleksy Keyboard - Happy Typing is not yet fully accessible, their April 29th update was very encouraging. Link to Fleksy Keyboard - Happy Typing in the App Store

Our third app pick of the month for April 2014 is Bible. When an app is inadvertently rendered inaccessible by a developer, the first question one usually has is, “When will they fix it?” In the case of YouVersion’s Bible app—an app which allows one to read hundreds of different Bible translations and share the Word with friends—the answer appears to have been something along the lines of, “In short order.” After having been notified of accessibility issues in version 5.0 of their Bible app, the developers at YouVersion quickly released an update that greatly improved VoiceOver support.
