Slay the Princess

Category

Description of App

You’re on a path in the woods. And at the end of that path is a cabin. And in the basement of that cabin is a Princess. You’re here to slay her. If you don’t, it will be the end of the world.

  • A fully-voiced, cosmic horror black comedy/romance. The Stanley Parable meets Call of Cthulhu with a dash of Disco Elysium.
  • Complex branching narrative with immersive, hand-penciled art.

Accessibility Comments

This game was authored using the Rem'Py visual novel engine, and it's self-voicing support is what makes it playable. You might like to read the documentation of that feature, but in short, press v to enable and up/down arrows to navigate (you may need to get past an initial splash screen by pressing Return, and want to read it which you can do using VOCR if the self-voicing will not initially work).

The game is certainly accessible and you shouldn't find yourself unable to progress the story at any point, and it is gratifyingly fun to boot, but it's a visual novel; not all of the whimsy and black humour is conveyed in the narrative and soundscape alone, but in the on-screen, predominantly black-and-white depictions. It may help you (at the risk of spoilage) to consult the Fandom Wiki and the TV Tropes page. Perhaps, if someone with working eyeballs and expertise in this engine could advise, we could reach out to Black Tabby Games to improve on the situation.

Usability

There are some accessibility issues with this app, but it can still be used if you are willing to tolerate these issues and learn how to work around them.

Other Comments

This is a delightfully complex story, more so than many branching narratives, and although the actual action takes place in relatively few locations, the effect of developing the story through seemingly small diversions of each path through the loop is really profound. Plus, wonderfully atmospheric narrative dialog and sound.

The game is available on Steam or, for my preference, on gog.com. It's not on the App Store, sadly. You can get a downloadable demo on itch.io; the game was too large for Black Tabby to sell there, and that's a pity because there's no doubt that that's probably the most accessible place to buy in my experience. On the upside, your purchase will also work on Windows.
