Description of App

The QR Reader App uses the latest 2D bar code reading technology to scan QR codes, store them in your History tab.
To use, simply launch the App and in the Scan tab (default) point your iPhone camera at the QR code to automatically scan.

Continued use of the flash may dramatically decrease battery life.

Accessibility Comments

On the opening screen for this app, VoiceOver locates only 3 tabs at the bottom of the screen: Scan, History, and Info. With limited vision, I detect the rest of the screen displays a video stream of what the camera is viewing; this would assist one in centering the QR code. I suspect there is at least one other control not being voiced by VoiceOver, since flash is mentioned in the app description, and the flash is not automatically activated even in total darkness. The History brings up a list which is always empty. The Info tab seems fully accessible. The app opens with the Scan function active by default. The greatest benefit for me is how easily the QR code is found with basic scanning of the camera over the code area. Although any flash appears inaccessible the app works extremely well even with lower levels of light. When recognized, a text label is immediately voiced by VoiceOver without needing to gesture to a results area. And, the app can scan another code without gesturing and activating a new scan control.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads most page elements.

Button Labeling

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some minor accessibility issues with this app, but they are easy to deal with.

Other Comments

I was searching for an app that would most easily read text QR codes I generate and use for an inventory system at my work. I wanted the following qualities:
* App was ready to scan when first opened;
* App would be forgiving and effective at finding QR codes;
* When code is found, both a simple tone & vibration indicate success;
* VoiceOver would automatically speak results;
* App would continue to be ready to scan additional QR codes without any gesturing;
* App would have automatic flash.
I checked out about 200 free apps looking for the one that most closely meets the above criteria; this app does it all except for the flash. Because I have some vision, I am able to avoid extremely low light conditions. This app makes it so easy to scan multiple codes with no need to mess around with clearing old results and activating controls for another scan. I am thrilled with this app.

With the upgrade to iOS 8.1.1 this app now has focus on the word "text" instead on the area where results appear. Therefore, one needs now to use a one-finger flick to the right to read results. This breaks one of the several features I particularly liked about this app.
