So, when I sign up with an email, the app sends me a verification code. The code is an image. Does any one know of any work arounds?

Try a phone number or you could maybe get a screen shot of it and copy it to something like TapTapSee, Identifi, etc.

Talkatone no longer uses credits to call people within the U.S. and Canada.
