Clubhouse

Description of App

Clubhouse is a space for casual, drop-in audio conversations—with friends and other interesting people around the world.

Go online anytime to chat with the people you follow, or hop in as a listener and hear what others are talking about.

The app is currently in beta and is invitation only. Every new member receives two invites and earns more invites by participating and hosting discussions and by other activity. To learn more about Clubhouse, I recommend this article.

Accessibility Comments

The app is almost fully accessible. The main problem being only a few buttons which are missing the label, for example in the calendar, also known as "Bulletin", there is an unlabelled button with a plus icon for creating a scheduled room that is located next to the "Upcoming for you" button.

Apart from that, certain pop-ups are not accessible, like the one you get when your request to go on stage to be able to speak gets accepted by the room moderators and you have to confirm it. However, this is not such a big issue, since this confirmation can also be done when you press the "Profile" button, or double-tap on your name in the participants list, and then in your profile screen press the "Accept speaking invitation" button.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads most page elements.

Button Labeling

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some minor accessibility issues with this app, but they are easy to deal with.

Other Comments

The developers are rolling out updates almost every week and they have already demonstrated their efforts in making the app more accessible with every update. They have also expressed their commitment for future accessibility improvements in the townhall discussions that take place regularly on Sundays at 9 AM US Pacific time. You can submit a question for town hall here.

There is a club named "15%" which focuses on topics like disability, accessibility and inclusion. This club is in touch with the developers of the app and advocates better accessibility of the app . Also, this club hosts a regular room on Thursday which discusses accessibility hacks in Clubhouse, so that is a good place to learn tips and tricks and get accessibility related answers you have about the app.

If you have further questions or would like to send feature suggestions and other feedback, there is an official contact form just for that.

If you want to be invited into Clubhouse, drop me a private message with your cellphone number including the dialling code using this contact form as the cellphone number is required to send the invitation.

I agree in general this is a good app for the blind and visually impaired. There are a couple unlabeled buttons as Adam lays out, including some in the onboarding screens, but it's not a major issue. I did miss being brought up to the front of a room, apparently, there is no VO notification unless you're really anticipating it and check for it, though I'm guessing that will get fixed soon. I think this would be a good place for, for example, support groups.

Right now almost everyone on there is a hustler in the thinkfluencer vein, and it's hard to find topics that aren't about tech (in a pretty narrow sense, I like many technology discussions in the real world). Some things this app might be good for:

- Support groups
- Cooperative coding sessions
- Skill-based discussion sessions (kind of like those Hadley puts on)

If people can wrangle an invite to the app, it would be great to coordinate some discussion. I'd be happy to do something on low vision support or getting started with programming as a blind or low vision person, though I suppose that's all dependent on how many of us can get on there. I've created an event for next Thursday (Adam I'd be happy to add you as a mod on this since you took the initiative here) at 3 pacific, 6 PM eastern, 11 PM GMT, in case people are on there and want to do some planning.

Hello Patrick,

thanks for your comment, but I don't feel like moderating such a discussion, mainly because English is not my native language and also because moderation using VoiceOver is not so easy. Moreover, my time is nine hours ahead of PST so the event will take place at midnight in my country.

I would like to also reply to your first point about notification when you are brought up on stage. Actually, there is a subtle sound when that happens. However, I agree the notification should be more evident.

Kind regards

Hi,
From reading all of the comments, this app scenes interesting. I wonder is the audio quality sounds a lot better compared to other platforms like zoom or other audio conferencing apps? also, can the app be used for music events? for example, hosting a virtual talent show?

I just downloaded the app. I understand, that you have to get an invite, currently I am listening to themosen at large podcast where he is reviewing the app. Is there anyone who would be willing to give me an invite? If you need my username. I will gladly provide it here. I like how there are different rooms going on with different topics like podcasting. It seems like one big virtual hall. With different rooms with which just seems awesome.

I actually can't wait for twitter spaces. I heard that it will sound a lot better than clubhouse. In fact someone already said that it does sound way better than clubhouse, they already have it on their account.

Hi. I love using this app. Yes it has a few things that could be improved when using Voiceover, but other than that, it's amazing!
Also, just wanted to put here the email address to contact the team, just in case you want to use that instead of the form on the website.

Thank you so much

Hi everyone. The right arrow key on my Mac has stopped working, hence my not being on here as of late. But anyway, my brother texted me a direct link to this app and I grabbed myself a copy last night. I played around with it a bit and am pretty impressed. The app is mostly accessible with VO, and the audio quality seems to be pretty good. I noticed a button that lets you choose the audio quality based on wi-fi. This could be a good thing at least for me, as the wi-fi in my building leaves a bit to be desired. I only spent a little bit of time with it though, so will have to read through the user guide and do more. I will also listen to Jonathan Mosen's review of the app. He always does such a nice job with those. One other thing I did notice though, is that pausing in-app notifications wasn't working. But perhaps this is going to be fixed.

Similar to live streams you might join on platforms like YouTube or Twitch, Clubhouse allows you to create events for anyone to join. Topics range from coffee talks to discussions on solo travel. These are steps for accessing and labeling the button for adding events to your calendar. Note that events are different from opening rooms, as they typically occur at a scheduled time rather than simply opening a room and chatting instantly.
1. On the main Clubhouse screen, there is a button which VoiceOver refers to as “bulletin.” The button is on the top middle and is located between the “invite friends” and “activity” buttons.
2. When you double tap this button, two buttons will appear. Find the “upcoming for you” button and double tap it.
3. A dialogue will open asking you what you would like to view. Flick to the “my events” button and double tap.
4. Tap the bottom of the screen. Voice over will state that there are no upcoming events and prompt you to add one.
5. Flick to the left and you will hear, “button.” This is the add event button.
6. Double tap with two fingers and hold on the second double tap. You will hear VoiceOver beep a few times and then you will be placed in an edit field where you may name the button.
7. Name the button and click “done at the bottom right.”

I have no issues with pausing app notifications. I do that when I'm at work. What makes it hard for you to pause, just switch it on, hit the option you want and it should work, keyword, should.

I feel more comfortable writing than talking to people and how do you take a head shot when you are blind? Can this be skipped or modified with a emogeies instead?

Hello. Just curious, what is that app? Is it available? If not, is there a release date for it?
Thank you so much
