Accessibility Comments

***AppleVis Editorial Team Note: The usability rating for this app has been adjusted based on user comments. The below accessibility comments were for an earlier version of the app.***

I gave this app another try after my last review of this version, and it actually seems to work better than before. Much of the app seems to be accessible, if hard to work with sometimes. The pill reminder still seems to be totally unusable, but the other features work well, even if some of the buttons aren't labeled correctly. The bug where swiping doesn't work still occurs occasionally, but you can usually get it fixed by dragging your finger around until you find something. Also, Voiceover sometimes gets stuck on the main menu buttons, rather than the buttons of the currently open screen. To fix this, try opening and closing notification center.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads most page elements.

Button Labeling

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

Some parts of the app are accessible with VoiceOver, but not enough to make it usable.

Other Comments

Note: There is also another Walgreens app specifically for the iPad, but since I don't own an iPad, I was unable to test it.

I downloaded this app yesterday after first checking AppleVis. Took my chances since the entry was old and it seems to me that things have been very much improved with the app and Voiceover. It's not perfect but it's pretty great. I was able to set up an account and set text alerts for prescriptions, check the status of my refill, check prescription instructions, very very nice. I haven't played too much with trying to scan barcodes so I don't know if that works and I haven't done any sort of shopping, but for the purpose I needed in handling my prescriptions, it's fabulous. Quite accessible on my iPhone 4.

While some parts of this app seem to be accessible with VO, I encountered a number of important accessibility roadblocks and would hesitate to recommend the current version. Here are a few of the issues I found on my iPhone 5S running IOS 8.0.2.

Issue 1: Upon first launch of the app, I was able to hear many screen elements but could not activate any of them. This was caused by a mostly inaccessible popover that could only be made to go away by closing and relaunching the app.

Issue 2: Most buttons on the main screen are unlabeled. There are separate text labels, and with time and patience it is possible to determine which label goes with which button. Beyond the main screen, there are numerous unlabeled or poorly labeled buttons throughout the app.

Issue 3: The listing of weekly specials is inaccessible to VO.

Issue 4: Choosing the "Transfer Prescription" option presented a screen with no information, just a single close button.

I found the store locator and some parts of the shopping section to be accessible given enough patience.

My primary interest in this app is refilling prescriptions. I was able to easily read prescription information and request a refill. It has the ability to scan barcodes but I wasn’t able to get this to work.
For the most part things seem to be labeled, but I did find some unlabeled buttons. In the form to sign up for their rewards program, there was a checkbox that wouldn’t toggle with voiceover, and a date picker that wouldn’t allow me to exit it. (I had to Close the program.) I confirmed that these do work without voiceover, and sent feedback.
