Description of App

Subwords is an exciting mix between a trivia and a word game. Words are split into fragments and you have to put them back together as fast as possible. The words in every level are bound to a certain topic, so you have to know about the topic to solve it! But it's no problem if you aren't that familiar with a specific topic: Simply click the bulb to learn something new!

The 27 topics not only range from general knowledge like animals and fruits to more specific fields of study like European countries, our solar system or greek mythology. And all of these topics can be played in the classic and in timed mode!

Subwords will help you learn new concepts improve your spelling skills and may even help you learn German!
Plus, it is fully accessible via VoiceOver!

How do I access the hidden levels? I have no idea.

By Klemens on Monday, April 22, 2019 - 21:44

Hi Sasha,
developer of Subwords here. The hidden levels are getting unlocked by playing the available ones. For every level you can earn out to 6 stars (3 in Classic and 3 in Timed mode) - And every hidden level has a specific amount of stars you need to have to unlock it. Hope that answers the question. If not, just sent a mail to support[at]subwords.app

A message for the developer: I am personally not a fan of the new feature where words are divided up by syllbles as I think it makes the game too easy. Perhaps you could make it a setting so users had the choice.

Hi, there seems to be a bug with the fruit level several times now I have had the issue where I select the word grape and that is accepted and grape is removed from the board, but when I go through all the other options on the board I am finally left with just the one word fruit and I don't have any options to make the word grapefruit which is what the hint tells me I need to make to complete the level.
also, I would like to suggest could we have an option on the actions menu of the rotor to cancel a selection, it saves having to go either hunting for what you want to deselect, or finding the selection area and losing your space on the board.
there also seem to be issues where sometimes I am focused in the selection area rather than on the board when I first start a level which can cost me seconds trying to escape from it, and sometimes focus gets bounced to it when a word is cleared off the board.
also VoiceOver feels sluggish sometimes when trying to navigate the board which can really slow me down as well and this is on an x so it certainly shouldn't be. over all its a fun little game though.

Hi - Sorry for the late reply. I agree that this makes the game easier, especially in english. In fact, the lower difficulty was the reason why I didn't divide the words in syllables in the first place. But I got so many messages that by not splitting into syllables, the game is counterproductive because it disturbs peoples knowledge of syllabification. That was why I changed things.

As for a setting for users - That could definitely be done. It will be some work so I cannot promise when I'll add it, but I definitely going to look into it!

Hi,

also sorry for the late reply. That's a super weird bug, so thanks for pointing it out! When you only select "grape" and "fruit" is still in there, the game will in fact reproduce another "grape" bubble, but for some reason this bubble is not discoverable via VoiceOver.

About your suggestion: You mean a rotor action for deselect the last bubble?

And I'm going to investigate the other two bugs, not sure why they happen though. May I ask: Which device are you using?

By alex wallis on Monday, April 22, 2019 - 21:44

Hi, what I am suggesting is a menu on the rotor that would quickly let you review all your selections then deselect any of them that you want, and also a more efficient way to insert selections to form a word where you want them, an issue I have often found is that I make a wrong selection but get some of the word right, so it would be good say if I made a wrong selection at the beginning to be able to choose to remove that and put another selection in its place without having to deselect everything after the bad selection, so it just needs to be more flexible.
I am using an iPhone x.

Hi Alex,

Sorry again for the late reply. I get the suggestion now, thanks for the clarification! I will definitely implement this!

Best,
Klemens

As I understand it, those who don't use voiceover are only able to deselect the last moves they made in order, most recent to first in the making of the word. I'd move to suggest we don't need "special treatment'"as it were, being able to select in any order unlike those not using Voiceover. Further, maybe a way to make it easier to deselect last selection is to use the scrub gesture, the same one used to activate back buttons, as it can feel much like erasing text.

By Klemens on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 - 21:44

Hi Paul,
The suggestion about the scrubbing is great, makes definitely more sense then using it to access the back button. But do you have any idea how to communicate the change? I think people might get confused if they play again and this gesture has changed.
About the deselection for non-VoiceOver users: They actually can deselect any bubble, I just haven't figured out how to make it work for VoiceOver users (before Alex gave the trivial idea with the rotor). I will definitely add it as soon as possible, super sorry that it isn't there yet.

Best,
Klemens

I actually don't use that scrub gesture I can't get it to trigger consistently, plus I think it would be slower to use it than flicking down on the rotor actions menu and double tapping to remove selections.

Is it possible to play Subwords on a braille display with speech muted? I like to read Audible books and play at the same time.
Thanks in advance.

By LadyMunch on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 - 21:44

I bought this game this morning and can confirm that it works like a dream with speech musted and just using braille. Looks like I've answered my own question.
