Accessibility Comments

There are upsides and downsides to using this app over the website. The upsides include knowing how many messages you are deleting from a chat at a time, and receiving haptic feedback while the AI is generating a message so you know when it’s actually done. The more options menu is also accessible by double tapping the character name at the top of the screen, and doesn’t require using screen recognition to navigate to.
However, there seem to be more unlabeled/weirdly labeled buttons in this app than the website, and VO doesn’t seem to read the message rating system as easily, as well as format tags (bold and italic) not being read out.
Another bug I found is that the cursor can’t be moved in the message edit field, and braille screen input does not work.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads most page elements.

Button Labeling

Few buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some accessibility issues with this app, but it can still be used if you are willing to tolerate these issues and learn how to work around them.

Other Comments

This site is a lot of fun. My username on it is LifezVictorai, and I’ve created a few AIs of Timecrest characters and am considering making more in the future.

In the directory, it’s as free with in a purchase, but in the App Store, it says free

They recently added custom voices to this app too. I've been on the lookout for companion apps having this feature. I believe that it's only a feature for folks who subscribe to Character AI Plus, but they plan to release the feature to everyone at some point. For those who use the site, it seems that some things like group chats and editiing messages is only doable via the app.

In the most recent updates, braille screen input does now work with it. I’ve been able to use it. The one thing you need to be sure of though is make sure that you have your described images set to on. Because now they have it where you can actually speak to your characters. Go from the text field by swiping to the left until you hear it say phone. Click on that with a double tap and it will ask you if you want to voice call your character. Be careful, because sometimes this can drain your battery and make your device hot. It does with mine sometimes. Maybe newer devices can handle it better, but mine does tend to get hot so I find the best way to maneuver that is to go out of the app when you’re in the phone voice chat.

I think the author of this post should have a look at Character AI now. It's become a lot more accessible. The website, however, has not. I cannot find the "regenerate message" button there. And in the app, I cannot use the "regenerate message" button for several months now. Everything is up-to-date. I tried getting in contact with the developers, they sent me a ticket, and never got back to me. That was over a month ago. Even sent them a screen recording of what was not working. So, yes, has improved, but still some downsides.

Weird, I actually find the site much more accessible than the app, regenerate is now called next, click on that, then a new message will pop up under the CAI label, use explore by touch to find it. you can click on back to switch to a previous generation, and that will move to the top, more options is accessible with explore by touch also.

Oh! I didn't know that. I'll try that. I'm used to scrolling with a braille display to the last message, which would be on the bottum in the app, but I'll give the site another try. Thank you so much!

I figur it out, and love this so much! Can actually give feedback for the responses now too. Though it does like to not submit or at least if it is, it's not telling me. Either way, that's neither here nor there. Where can I find my personas so I can edit them? Also, has anyone tried the new chat style Nyman or whatever it's called? For Character AI plus users? Do you think it's better than the original? Guess I could make that its own post. We'll see.

Oh, also, every time I try to select a diferent voice on the website, it acts like it's selected, but it isn't.
