AcoustiCards:Personalized songs, musical greetings

Category

Description of App

This app allows the user to create highly customisable audio greeting cards to send to friends and family. Each card allows the user to select a name for the recipient, and depending on the card type, can allow the selection of various options such as the recipient's age, certain activities they like to do, where they are located, and who would play them in a film. The available cards are in app purchases, and once bought, the user can choose to send the card via facebook, email, or just copying a link. The recipient can then download the card in MP3 format.

Accessibility Comments

This app is accessible with voiceOver, however there are a few issues that take getting used to. On the main window, the controls for the card type and sample are not designated as buttons or links, just blocks of text,. Also, on the main window, if the user flicks right and moves onto an item on the next page, VoiceOver loses focus and moves back to an item on the first page. It is necessary to do a 3 finger flick up to access items on the next page. On every window, there are 2 links labelled index.html. The first link with that title from the top is actually a link to access purchased cards, and the second is an about link. When selecting a card, if the user presses the preview button but they are not on the appropriate page, the focus will shift to the purchased cards link and activate that instead. To get back to the previous window, it is necessary to activate the first index.html link, which is actually a back link. To avoid this accurance, the user will have to flick up with 3 fingers to go to the next page to ensure that they are actually on the preview button. This problem also occurs in the freestyle card window when typing in the second text field. Finally, in the preview window, the control labelled tap to play doesn't work, it is necessary to tap the top left corner of the screen to find the back button and flick left to get to the play button. Apart from those issues, the app is very easy to use.

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

Most buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

There are some minor accessibility issues with this app, but they are easy to deal with.

Other Comments

One issue not related to VoiceOver is that when listening to samples of available cards, if the user selects a sample while another is playing, the first sample does not stop playing, instead, both samples play on top of each other. Also, switching to another window in the app does not stop the playing of any samples the user is listening to.
