Accessibility Comments

This app has a very accessible and easy to use interface, with nice options for mailing a record of the transaction, and also rounding up or down the transaction and splitting the results. It's ad supported, but the ad is the last element in the screen, and is unobtrusive, so it will not get into your way. There is one unlabeled button in the top right corner of the screen that takes you to Settings. Most users will probably either use the default settings, which only requires input of a single amount, or will immediately set the "Tax" switch in Settings to "On" in order enter both a bill amount and tax.

Double tapping in text fields brings up a numeric keypad in the bottom third of the screen, with 4 rows of number buttons in 3 columns, and a top 5th row of buttons for "delete", "clear", and "done". The top number row is "7 8 9", next is "4 5 6", then "1 2 3", and the bottom row is a "0" button that spans two columns in width with a decimal point (i.e., "period" button) at the bottom right corner.  (This delimiter might be a comma, for instance, for users in European countires, and the appropriate currency symbol based on your Settings > General > International > Region Format will also be added after numbers are entered.)

Tip percentages can be entered simply via default buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, or "other" when the separate tip switch is set to "off" in settings; 15%, 20%, 2xTax when the tip switch is set to "on") or by entering either a specific tip amount or value in a text box.  In the case of any changes, all amounts, percentages, and totals are automatically adjusted, and the user can simply flick through the controls to readh them off.

Similarly, a "Split BIll" section has buttons for 1, 2, 3, 4, or "other", which allows users to simply choose a number button for up to 4 people, or enter a quantity through the numeric keypad.  Both the individual totals and individual tip amounts are displayed.

Buttons for rounding up and down either the Grand Total for the bill or the Person Totals for split bills into whole dollar amounts are placed in front of each of the amount text fields.  The first doublle tap adjusts the amount to the nearest whole number, and subsequent double taps increase or decrease by an additional dollar.  Again, all amounts and tip percentages are recalculated and displayed when any changes are made, and the number of necessary user actions and data entries is kept to a minimum

Other Comments

The last transaction is left up on the screen data fields. This is quite handy to have, but it also means that each time you start to use the numeric keypad to enter new data, you should first double tap the "clear" button in the top row, just to the right of the "delete" button at the top left. This is also true of entering tip percentages or the number of people for splitting a bill -- the value of the last button setting used will be shown in the text field. When you have completed calculations, a "Compose" button in the top left corner of the screen lets you send a report of the iTip results, along with any additional comments, as an email. The Settings menu reached via the unlabeled button in the top right corner of the screen also lets you connect to the developer's (PalaSoftware, Inc.) web page, or send an email message to their support group. (You also have the option to configure settings to enter data with the standard iPhone virtual keyboard for entering numbers and symbols in place of the numeric keypad or to use a slider instead of using buttons and/or text boxes to enter tip amounts if you turn on the switch for "Qualitative Tipping". Both of these are less accessible entry methods.) Although this free app is available internationally, it is only localized in English, so the few text entries will show up as "Bill Amount", "Tip Percent", "Tip Amount", "Grand Total", "Split Bill", "Person Total", and "Individual Tip", plus "other" on the buttons. As previously stated, the correct currency symbol is added ($, £, €, etc.) according to the region setting of your iOS device. I would not bother to change this when traveling in a different country just to get the correct symbol, since your region selection affects your default formats for time, date, currency, addresses, etc. It's much easier to just add a note to the email record of the actual currency used. However, if you do want to temporarily change your region, you should delete the app from the App Switcher window and relaunch it for the changes to take effect.
